Hello everyone.

I'm a new person to the game, and i'm just astound that i have missed this game. Well that said i will get to the point. I see the ranged tree in the fighter tree and that has caught my eye. While i do know that you can not get it on the beginner island, i'm just wonder if it's fun to use. Also are there many type of ranged wpns. Does the animation look neat. Just wondering if anyone can give me any information on this or point me to a post or website with some information and maybe some pictures.

Thanks I really appreciate it
Ronan

I was never a ranged weapons guy, but I do seem to recall one player that was. Iirc, he'd have his mek follow him around as a portable ammo locker and just shoot up everything.

types:

Pistol (and bowpistol)
Rifle (And bowrifle)
Grenade launcher (Area of effect damage)
Rocket launcher (Line of effect damage)

at least 4 different designs of each (one for each race) but there may be 12 each, not sure if there are medium and high quality patterns.

Then there are 3 types of ammo (Slashing, ccrushing and piercing)

The effects i have seen are pretty good, disapointed that you can not duel wield pistols, but the pistol idle animation is quite funky.

The biggest setback is that you pretty much have to craft your own ammo and it wil ltake a loong time to do that for a short period of fighting

Thanks for the information everyone. I'm excited and hope to be on the mainland in a couple of days i guess. Sounds fun though, roam around with a rifle and a pack mule animal for portal ammo locker and craft my own stuff. Like living off the land, and just exploring. I can't wait

Thanks again

I've just tried 'em out a couple days ago, was a bit bored...

The animations and models look *very* cool... but IMO, that's about the only good thing about ranged fighting...

The damage caused is quite weak in comparison to the same level / skill of melee weapon (except maybe daggers, which are also terrible damage), and the ammo is visciously expensive when bought from NPC's. You basically have to craft your own, but still then, the ammo cost is very high.

Last but not least, there aren't any root type abilities that allow you to keep the mob you're attacking at distance. While I think you can fire at any range, the damage is so low that you'd want to be able to protect yourself better for the inevitably longer fight. Basically, you have to either shoot plants all day, play in a team, or use it in PvP.

Range Weapons can be useful in PvP tho, partially because of their range, and also because of a higher chance to get critical hits. When you aim the head of another player and it crits, it'll stun him for a few seconds, which in PvP is always a good thing :)

You can run around while firing a ranged weapon. You don't need to root it to keep it at a distance, just keep running away from it. Works particularly well with slower critters like arma, yelk, bodoc, bawaab. (Be sure you're using an ammo damage type the creature doesn't have armor against.

That being said, plants are often still a good option with the appropriate jewels, and it can be helpful to enchant your ranged weapon with an actual root spell as well.

Ammo crafting isn't bad if you maintain it at the same level as your fight. That can be trouble for some who like the combat more then the harvesting and crafting, but if you don't mind keeping it even it's not too much trouble to throw together some ammo for a hunt. I also advise getting to lvl 50+ in harvest before really attempting ranged. (Make sure you're making max damage ammo. Also, be sure to use "rifle" or "pistol" ammo plans regardless of the weapon, the "bow" types are interchangeable but use more mats per shot and is wasteful.)
