Is crafting / Foraging a must?

Do you have to forage and craft to make you way in Ryzom? I've never been much for crafting in MMOs preferring to be out there blowing stuff up or hitting things with something sharp and pointy.
I've run though most of the quests on the starter island and am just about set for heading for the mainland, but I've not done many of the crafting/foraging quests as it's not my thing. Am I making a big mistake not doing crafting/foraging along side everything else, or is there enough money to be made selling drops from mobs and buying stuff from other players?

You can make your way through the lands on pretty much any mix or unmix of the skill tree.
Do you have to dig? nope. Do you have to craft? nope. Can you stick to fighter and get by? yep. Can you stick to magic and get by? yep. Can you avoid fighter and or magic and stick to crafts and get by? yep.
Of course, those that completely ignore a section of the skill tree might have a tougher time in certain places or in certain situations but a player character can manage if he/she wants to work it.
And, later, if a player decides that he/she should take up another part of the skill tree to fill holes in ability, or just to try something new for awhile, then all that player has to do is start working that section of the skill tree. It's never really too late.

its a matter of preference. If you want to try it, then go for it. I've known players that didn't dig or craft. Its not essential to survival, but I will say that most people try it at some point. The digging and crafting in this game is a large part of the skill trees, so often gets quite a bit of attention.
I, myself, didn't dig or craft much til I had my melee and magic trees well over 150. Part of the beauty of Ryzom is that you can start a different tree at any level. If you don't feel like digging or crafting, don't. If you feel like it later on theres nothing to stop you from trying it then.

No expert here, but I have a feeling, as with other mmorpg's that until you reach a certain level or specialty in crafting, it often costs more money to level it up than you can make with it. (This includes farming the items you might use for leveling a skill, as those items have a merchant value on their own).
Meanwhile, unlike other games, NPC items are absolute rubbish compared to crafted items, as well as heinously expensive, and mobs don't drop gear. Hence, crafting is essential in the game, but it doesn't mean that you have to be a crafter.
As for foraging, some materials can only be acquired through it. Of course, you can just let someone else do the job for you.
Yes, you can go without crafting and foraging, yet in the long term, you'll be pretty heavily inconvenienced (and of little use to a guild), as well as loose out on considerable revenue.
If you're just starting the game, though, don't worry about it, you can always catch up later if you change your mind
Finally, I'd suggest that you just give it a shot while you're in Ruins of Silan. Both the crafting and foraging have very interesting mechanics, and I think everyone should at least give it a shot before they blow it off. The missions on the starter island are quite easy, there's lots of people to give you a hand, and these missions won't be available once you teleport to the mainlands

My main has no skill in craft and only 5 levels of harvest, and ive never had any problems with money or items.
Selling loot from kills can be quite profitable
