Try running scandisk on your computer.
My computer kept freezing in Ryzom and here all I had to do was run chkdsk on it and it works again.

I have the same problem!
However, it is very random. Sometime, after choosing my char, it loads fine in 20 seconds. Other times it just does not load at all - I waited 10 minutes this morning, reading a chapter of of book while waiting!!! Some other times, after it will take 1 or 2 minutes to load.
I really do not understand this randomness!

You didnt give any info on your computer but.... I had the same thing happening on one of my computers that has a Radeon 9200. If you have a ATI card older then like a 9700.....one fix that has worked for many people on the locking up is to go into the Ryzom Configuration program and select "Open GL". The game will warn you when you go to start it that it recommends you use D3D but say no.
My one computer was locking up at load screen like you or sometimes getting into game and locking up shortly after. This solved it. There is obviously some big ATI D3D bug that the game creates and they need to get it fixed ASAP.

Okay. I had the same problems running on an AMD system with an Radeon 9200. I only started having this problem when the main place I play (work) set up a firebox (firewall) to block some problems we were having with the Sasser worm. They have left all ports open other than the one port used with the Sasser worm (port 445 if I am not mistaken)
To resolve this issue I configured the WIN XP firewall to use port forwarding as outlined in the following thread.
http://ryzom.com/forum/showthread.php?t=631
Now the Windows XP firewall can only be configured to forward to a single port, so I kinda split the difference of the 2nd set of numbers (1000 - 3000) and placed 2000 in the forwarded port.
********** If anyone is unsure as to how to set this up: *************
Open your network connection properties
Click the advanced tab
Check the box to enable the firewall
Click on settings at the bottom
Click Add
Name the connection under description (I used Ryzom)
Enter your IP address or computer name into the IP or Name box
(Use IP address and set a static IP if you are using a router.)
(Use Computer Name if are unable to set a static IP)
Enter the external port into the box provided (47851)
Enter the internal port into the box provided (anything between 1000 - 3000)
Choose UDP as the type.
Hit okay
Make sure it is checked.
You should be all set.
*********************************************************
I can get on every time now, but time out after every 20 minutes or so. Im currently trying to determine if this problem is related to the settings I have placed in the Win XP firewall ( Can do more testing when I get home from work ) or the firebox. More than likely the firebox since the packets seem to be looping there.
Hopefully this will help someone, and then someone smarter than I could build on this, and maybe help me resolve the disconnection issue I am having.
In addition ( anyone know how to configure WIN XP firewall to forward to a range of ports instead of just a single one ? )

Well one item that also may relate to some problems you mentioned here....
If you currently have say a cable internet connection and you have it going through like a Linksys router you really dont need to have the Windows XP firewall enabled that came with the new Service Pack 2.
The router already has a very good firewall so by running with Service pack 2 you have in effect 2 firewalls running and to me I would think that would be causing some problems.
Now if your cable connection just goes straight into your computer disabling the windows firewall is probably not a good idea. I have heard a few people say they disabled the firewall with sp2 on XP and this got rid of the problem of getting disconnected after 20 minutes of play or so.

Problem with proposed scenario is that if I disconnect the firewall on the system, I can no longer use the port forwarding features. Which allow me to connect in the first place.
Unfortunately, I cannot alter the hardware firewall's port information, as its not my unit. (Playing at work, when I can) else I would have done that as soon as I started having issues.

Actually I work at a call center.. I wont say which company, but Im positive that a few of the people in game right now use the products I do support for. I will say its a popular manufacturer of Video cards.
In any case, its a very relaxed enviroment, and we are allowed to do pretty much what we want as long as it doesnt affect our performance. So we have quite a few people playing MMORPG's here.
DAOC
Horizons
SWG
FF XI
CoH
Etc.
Not to mention the multiple connections outbound for external servers for Quake, UT 2004, and Call of Duty.
The thing that gets me is Ryzom is the ONLY one of the bunch that is having problems getting through this new Firewall.

I've experienced a similar problem. I always get to the character selection screen. After that, sometimes I get in game quickly and sometimes it freezes.
Given what I've read on these boards, I lean towards an ATI Radeon problem rather than the firewall issue. Once I do get in, things run fine and I've never been disconnected.
If it is a video card issue, Ryzom should do some work. Simply favoring Nvidia over Radeon will cost them players over time. Patience is a virtue, but isn't endless.
System:
Radeon 9800
1024 MB ram
Pentium IV
