Yes it is. From the day you subscribe by using your serial number provided with the game, you can play for one month for free. 
However you still need a valid credit card, because during the registration process the billing system needs to check if there would be no problem for paying the monthly fee later - but it's only a test, and you don't pay anything for the first month anyway.
