Ex-FFXI Player.. Couple quick questions

Well, first off.. Hello... I have been playing FFXI since the first day of US Computer Release (Long time, I know) and I really want to get out of it.. It's just... ugh, boring now... Ryzom has really cought my eye and I'm thinking of making the switch, but before I do I got a few questions...
1) I see there is a unlimited free trial.. how far will this free trial get me? The only reason I ask is, I currently have 2 weeks left on my FFXI subscription and I'd rather not throw another charge onto my CC until that one is off...
2) How does this game stack up against the more popular MMORPGS, like FFXI and WoW.
3) Is there a good crafting system? I just love crafting, and I would be hard pressed to play a game without any crafting at all!
4) And lastly, how are the classes? Are they different enough that each class "shines" at what its doing? Or are they kinda the same.. if that question even makes sense
Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

Hi Jacend, the unlimited free trial is a bit of...erm...misadvertisement in a manner of speaking, basically theyve released a new area for Beginners, Which is Quite Big, and very nicely done (Amazing in one word). you could be there untill the end of the world, or at least a game
), and there are no lvl caps. Of course the variety of mobs and resources is limited, so if you'd like to go to the mainland and experience the full game you'd have to buy a subscription.
I dont really know how it stacks up agains WOW or FFX! since i havent played them, but i like it better then UO or SRO.
The Crafting system is well thought out and very, VERY diverse. Much better then in UO.
And lastly this is a skill based game there are no classes you are defined by what you do. You could be anyting and everything that youd like, but there are 4 main branches that split after 20 lvl and then after 50 lvl etc.
1. fighting
2. Magic
3. Crafting
4. Prospecting or Harvesting
I hope that answers all your questions, but just come over and look for yourself, its free
And Welcome to Ryzom *huggles*

Thanks, that does answer my questions
The only reason I asked is cause I'm not too sure my PC could handle Ryzom.. I think I heard it needs a 64 meg vid card, and I only have 32 meg.. BUT, There are other games that say 64 meg minimum and will run on my PC.. I have a new on the way, but it won't be here for a few weeks... I didn't want to download a game that might not work if I wasen't too sure I'd enjoy it
But, its now downloading so we'll see tomarrow.. as its now bed time

Some of what Ryzom offers is rather unique.
The "mobs" here behave much more "organically" than in any other I've played. Herd animals act like herd animals, preditors act like preditors. It feels very much alive as a game world.
As an example, if you sit still around a bunch of yubo (small pig/guinny pig hybrid looking critters), you're liable to have one walk up to you and hike a leg and take a pee on you... or come up to you, stand up on its hind legs and use its snout to give you a "wet willy".
Herd animals gather in herds and roam about an area. Preditors can be found working the edges of those herds. You can tell when a preditor is attacking a herd because the herd will get agitated... so on and so forth.
Ryzom, as a game world, really does feel more alive than any of the others I've played.
The economy is also almost exclusivly a player made craft driven economy. Mobs dont drop items, they drop materials for crafters that you would expect to find on such mobs, such as skins, bones, eyeballs, teeth, wings, ect.
There are some NPC items (armor and weapons ect) available at the merchants but those are grossly over priced and bare bones effective. If you want anything decent, you need to get it from a player crafter. The NPC merchants hold items for sale by other players at a price markup determined by the player selling the items. Most of the really good stuff is either kept in reserve for guildies and friends or crafted to fill orders agreed to by the crafter.
Guild membership is important in this game. Personal reputation is also important. "Problem children" tend to find themselves cut off from the better stuffs and this has tended to help keep the community more healthy than most other game worlds.

I'm fairly sure I used to play Ryzom with an old TNT2 32 meg... not completely sure, but I think if you turn all the graphics all the way down, you should be able to run the game. It will look awful compared to a higher end machine (256 meg x700 in this laptop, looks GREAT, full detail and still no graphics lag), but it's playable, and after a while you don't even notice anymore.

Thanks! That makes me feel alot better... Hoping it runs on my box.. I'm sure it'll look like crap, but no worse then FFXI or WoW looked on my PC with my crappy vid card... I'm kinda used to the crappy gfx
Now, I just need to get the client download to work...It ended up becomming corrupted being downloaded last night
But no biggy, I got the world cup to keep me entertained while it downloads xD
