Whats that mean?!? I have played the fantasy settings in EQ/EQ2, the medieval setting of DAoC, the scifi setting of SWG, where does Ryzom fit in?

I see alien-like models in screenshots but as far as I can tell there aren't any phaser guns, hehe. Im downloading now so I hope my answers will be forthcoming, but in trying to find an appropriate and fun character name I would like a little more info about the what exactly science fantasy means.

Welcome to our Giant Root Ball!

Other than playing the game, the best place to get a feel for this envioronment is by reading the Lore.

Once you pick your race and create your character, you'll be on a training island. Some advice:

1. Don't judge the game by that island, 'port to the mainland before you decide whether you like it or not.

2. Use your time on the training island to get comfortable with the controls, then 'port to the mainland. Its more populated and most everyone is willing to help. Just ask in region, or send a /tell <character_name> to anyone you see on line.

3. Don't take the melee/fighter starter pack, every one gets combat anyway. Get a mage pack, a harvester pack, and a crafter pack.

4. Don't worry about "mis-spending" your skill points, as the game progresses you'll have more skill points than you need.

Enjoy!

The population of Atys, the Homins, are quite primitive. They were brought to the planet from elsewhere, in their limited mindset spaceships are mistaken for dragons and the advanced race (Karavan) in strange suits are looked upon like gods.

The Homins learned magic from the "nature spirits" called Kami.

It all makes sense, really :D

Reposting an explanation I wrote on MMORPG.com...
Ryzom is Science-Fantasy genre. Atys, the world it takes place on, is a living planet, much like a giant plant. One of the "higher powers"/factions is the Karavan, mysterious beings from elsewhere who use technology. Homins (the collective term for the four playable races) are more or less alien - they might have been human at some point, but we don't know. They may have mutated or evolved from human colonists, and Atys might be the product of a terraforming gone wrong. Magic isn't quite like traditional fantasy magic - it is explicable. Atys being a plant, it has sap. Homins also have sap, which is parellel to blood in their bodies and acts as energy for producing magic.

Homins are essentially a fairly primitive (in terms of technological development) set of species who have been subject to interference by more advanced beings - the Kami, Karavan, and Elias Tryton. It's like an example of what would happen if the Prime Directive (Star Trek) were violated. :p

"Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic." - Arthur C. Clarke, a quote somewhat applicable I think.

So, to sum up the answer to your question, Ryzom can be science-fiction or fantasy to varying extents depending on the "eye of the beholder." Personally, I love sci-fi, so I prefer to view it as more on the sci-fi side.

It is great for roleplaying. :)
Welcome. :)
