New to Ryzom, Questions Galore!

Hey guys. I just recently subscribed to Ryzom. Right now the game is installing but i've just got a couple of questions im eager to get answered.

Im a huge fan of MMORPG's. Ever since my first time of Everquest, i've been highly addicted. But, never too happy. I think the longest game i've ever stuck to was WoW, but I have jumped through so many games its unbelievable.

Right now im just trying to find an atmosphere I will enjoy, and im hoping this game has it.

Anyways, I was wondering if there was a strong population? I normally see a game by its forums activity, and the forums DO seem active, so that leads me to believe the game is strong.

Im also wondering if the gameplay is great for someone as myself, considering I liked the dynamics of World of Warcraft and Runescape, but couldn't stand the immature community.

Also, will I end up grinding? Am I to be forever stuck into a giant wheel? It doesn't really bother me. I do enjoy grinding, as long as I can find an involving quest, or have good goals set before me.

That, and PvP. Im looking something closer to Lineage 2 PvP or Dark Age of Camelot Realm vs. Realm. If the game has anything like this I would be very happy.

But, besides all the questions, I can't wait to integrate myself with the community and everyone, because I really think I will enjoy the game.

Cheers!

Welcome kenever :)

I'd say there's a strong community, and in that respect there's a strong population. Not a large population, but I see more people here than I ever did in EQ (late in that game's life) and far more player interaction here than I did in EQ2. Lately I've seen more activity on the starter isles than I have done in a long time, which is certainly a good sign for the future.

I can't comment much more than this on how Ryzom compares to other games but many people have said that the community is more mature than elsewhere.

Grinding is eventually pretty much inevitable if you want to do anything but explore or roleplay. Each skill branch has 250 levels and there's a multitude of branches, predominantly in the Craft skill tree. There aren't really any involved quests so you've to set your own goals or pick up those that your guild / friends wish to achieve.

There is consensual PvP in various flavours. Higher level regions - some of the prime roots and the Nexus - are guild v guild. Characters aligning themselves with one or other of the alien/superior races may toggle a faction v faction flag with global effect. Guilds may fight for possession of outposts, and the material rewards they bring, in arranged battles 2 hours in length. And then there is personal duelling.

*hugs* Hope you have fun, honey, and feel welcome to try a "/tell jamela" in case I am online :D

Welcome! :D

The game is quite a bit different from WoW as it isn't questbased, crafting is usually what makes people "risk their lives" just to harvest better materials. The gameplay might come as a shock if you expect WoW.

You will find grinding, hopefully meaningful grinding.

PvP is (i think) not the strongest side of Ryzom. But your guild can declare war on outposts to get some benefits in the game.

As I'm somewhat new to the game (a few days played), let me just offer some quick advice, and that's to take your time learning what you're doing. The learning curve in the very beginning is kind of frustrating, and unlike WoW, the missions they give you can be somewhat difficult as it may sound simple (deliver this to some guy in the next town) but you may end up having to go through very hostile mobs that come out of practically nowhere and gang up on you.

I've found the beginning quite frustrating, but once you start figuring it out, it starts to get a bit easier. I made my first sword last night, and it was a great accomplishment for me. In a few days, I may just laugh at that as yet another noobie moment.

Again, don't get discouraged at the difficulty in the beginning. This isn't WoW by any stretch of the imagination, and I don't mean that in a bad way. WoW is simplistic to keep an audience of young people interested. Saga wouldn't keep them interested mainly because it requires a lot more effort to really get yourself knowledgeable on the game.

The community is pretty cool. I've met a few people who are very nice, some veterans, others noobs like me. It helps that I run around and heal people a lot, but I'm sure meeting people is just as easy if that isn't your intention.

The advice everyone gives is to get to the main cities of the game as soon as you can. I haven't done so yet, so I can't tell you what it's like there. I'm looking forward to it, so we'll see when that happens. I'm currently having too much fun still in the noobie area.

If you do harvesting, and I don't see why you wouldn't as it helps to pick up some money and some materials for craftign, remember that at level 10, the harvesting starts to become a bit more dangerous. There's a protection factor that plays out until you hit 10. Then it goes away and things have a nasty tendency to explode. It's not the end of the world. Just be ready for it when it happens.

Hope that helps. If you need any noob advice (no one is a better noob than me), feel free to ask me in game. You may hook up with quite a few other people before then, and that's probably a good idea as well.
