How do I travel around starting island without getting slaughtered?

I'm trying to extract something called Basic Beng Amber, but it says I have to go to the mountains, but every time I try to leave, I get slaughtered by 2 star things that automatically attack.
I was given a quest to go to Stalli, but again, the outside is filled with these things. Is there some way around this without having to run through everything or become a melee god beforehand?

Pick your way carefully - "sneaking" is an extremely valuable skill to learn. On the islands the predators won't pay you any mind so long as you keep 15m distance. Maybe even less, but I don't think so. Admittedly, this is much easier to say than to do. A little melee training and a player made weapon should allow you to handle a single weeny ragus quite easily, however, so when you are attacked try to make sure there isn't another one hanging nearby that might join in.

Set your compass to 50m radius. Then don't let any aggressive (ragus, gingo) orange dots get within half of that radius. Head towards herds of herbivores (capryni, bodoc, yubo), unless they look flustered - if you see herbivores running away from something, avoid the area. But usually herbie herds are a sign of safety. Hmm...this is the nice animal AI in action.
Welcome!

For some reason all animals are orange dots to me. Is that actually what you meant? Stay away from any animals?

Your compass doesn't differentiate between predator, herbivore, plant or kitin, although large groups - say 4 or more - are unlikely to be predators. A predator may be hiding amongst them, however.

Yes, they're all orange dots...I should've been more clear.
Sneaking involves both the compass and being aware of the environment itself. So if you see an orange dot within 50m, try to see what it is while keeping your distance. If it's a ragus or gingo, avoid it. If it's a capryni or bodoc, ignore it or go towards it.

There has got to be a better way than this. I have died my 5th time trying to get to this place. I get completely slaughtered by five or six creatures that come chasing after me. I CAN'T GET THERE, and I'm a 16th level fighter. There has to be a better way to finish a noobie mission that I was given. I can't get out of this place AT ALL.

Don't try to run through them, run around them - if you do pick up an attacker you're more likely to only get one then too, which you should be able to handle with a player made weapon.

on topic:
spend a little time watching animals to see which are agressive, and which are not. then just keep an eye on where you are walking, it's good practice for later to be able to travel around the towns on the islands without fighting..
off topic:
sounds like you have a foraging mission, in which case i would abandon it, or if its from the welcomer *shrug*, and come to the mainland. they are really, really, really hard to do, even if you were lv50 forage
(you dont need to complete this mission, you wont miss out on anything by not doing it.. Ryzom isnt a mission based game at all really)

Yes, it's a foraging mission. And I have a delivery mission. I can't do either one of them. I just died again, being very careful, but then got tag teamed by two creatures that chased after me. Managed to kill one, but got killed by the other. This game is getting really frustrating to the point where I may just quit if this is what I have to expect in this game from now on.
By the way, it won't let me abandon the quest. It's the stupid welcome to bornea mission where I'm stuck getting slaughtered over and over again.
