Just wanted to join the boards. I downloaded this game Friday and began my noob life this weekend. So far I like it. I just wanted to ask a few questions.

About how many people play on the American server?
What is to like and hate about this game?
I would just like some info that a starter may need from the vets of the game.

I look forward to the adventures...

Hello there. :D
About how many people play on the American server?
I've no idea. It's just the English server, though. It has players from America, Europe, Australia, etc...
What is to like and hate about this game?
That question might be a bit hard to answer in a way. It asks for an opinion rather than a fact, and opinions vary from person to person... For example, there are players who hate the outpost PvP and others who like it. So it'll be easy to answer in that people love expressing their opinions. XD

One of the best things about the game is the community :)

I have heard that and that is one of the main reasons I went in this direction.

Good Boy *patpatpat* :D

Welcome to the giant treehouse.

Jup, the international Community is awesome :)

First, don´t judge the book by is cover, i.e. not the Game by its Nooby Island.
It will probably pretty lonely there, so get a few levls, practice until you´re comfortable with the UI and then port to the Main-Land.
Lot´s of folks will gladly help you if you just ask nicely in Region Chat, but don´t be drafted into the next best guild. ;)
Make your own choice, just like with the Skills, do what you want to.
Theres´s no nerfing your char as you always get new XP to undo supposed "damage" and there are so many skills you´l be glad you get an overview someday ;) :D

If you´re nice, people are nice.
If you like PvP, do it. If not, then don´t.
If both, well.. then do it. ;)
Unless you have FUN!

The community is one of the main reasons I'm coming back myself, after being gone for over a year :D

Where might I find the best newbie guide? I would like to know things like, what in the world was that green stuff that I used my pickaxe on the island?

I am new to Ryzom but a vet to MMO's. I played UO from November of 1997 until December of 2004 and then SWG from December 2004 until this past February. I tried AO and didn't like it and I tried WoW and DAoC and didn't care for either of those.

btw, what does "nerf" mean?

Couple different things in different contexts:

If the devs decide there are balance problems in the skills, they could change the power of one skill up or down. The one that went down is usually considered to have been "nerfed". Recently, elem magic and heal magic both got "nerfed" a bit to better balance them against melee.

Or

XP in Ryzom is determined on the highest skill used in the team plus the number of peeps in the team. Each person has lots of different levels, but it only counts the levels of the skills actually used. As an example, my close combat skill (daggers) is about 100 or so. My heal skill is 210. Let's say you have a melee skill around 100 as well. You and I team and we find the right mob for 2 level 100 melee fighters to attack to get good xp. By mistake, I heal you while you are still fighting. Because that skill is so high, the xp will drop dramatically. Or be killed completely. In that case, I "nerfed" the xp.

Welcome to the forums, take what you read here with a pinch of salt, being an MMO vet you should know that forums are the place people vent there anger.
There are a fair numbero f players, but a lot less than you will find in other standard MMORPG's.

What I like is the vast amount of skills and combinations, and the "Pick up and play" classes. If i feel like meeling i can meele, if i want to play mage i can cast and if my team dies i dont have to yell for a cleric i can heal them myself.
The community is great, the best i have come accross yet
The opotunity to Roleplay and develop a charecter is vast, and there is a rich history yet still the ability to be creative.
There are ltos of places to exsplore, and its good fun doing so.
The enviroment is alive and believable

What i hate?
hmm... to be honest i dont hate anythign about it, there are a few minor iritations (some useless skill trees, some weapons that dont work as well as they should) and some things that i would like to see improved, but all in all it is a plesant gaming exsperiance.

The best advice i can give is do what ever you enjoy. You dotn have to dig, and you dont have to cast spells. you can do anything.
Other than that, dont join the first guild you meet, get to know a few of them and find out wich is best for you, ask lots of questions in the region chat as many people will glady help you out.
As for guides i dont know many in debth general guides, so again, just ask when ever you ned some advice or help
