Any tips for a new ranged warrior?

I'm giving ranged a blast and was wondering if anyone could give me a few tips.

I started a new character and it seems that if I keep moving I can take down bigger foes than I could with magic or melee at the same level but it takes me longer to do it. I can see that ammo is going to be a problem unless I stay on step ahead with my crafting to stop myself running out.

Also is the lack of animation when moving and attacking normal? It seems a shame with such cool looking weapons and blast effects.

Ranged is is no doubt the hardest grind in Atys, but it has it's fun aspect. Doing damage while staying away from the mob is a unique feature of ranged combat. However, once you get past lvl 100, the tables turn somewhat. Before that, Ranged does moderate damage, somewhere between 2-hand and magic I think (been ages since I experienced lower levels). However, at lvl 100 elemental, you get double missiles, which, combined with a good amplifier, easily lifts elemental to the #1 damage dealer, with 2-handed melee following second.

Still, they have downsides. With magic you cant move while casting, and with melee, you need to stay on top of and facing your target. With range, as long as the target is within range (40m on a well-crafted [bow]rifle) and you have ammo, you do damage.

On the other hand, to master ranged combat, you need to effectively master 3 things: foraging (to gather ammo mats), crafting (to supply you with the ammo you need) and the fighting itself.

Basically, ranged is at the moment more of a fun skill rather than a primary focus for most people. Of course there's people using it as their main combat (e.g. Crythos if I'm correct), but the ammo requirement is a heavy discouraging factor to most.

(Now I haven't even gotten into why launcher/autolauncher is such a pain to use and level, that'll become apparent in time ;) )

Greets,

Welcome to Atys! *huggles*

Ranged is harder to level, but more fun :) I do suggest you level something like fight first so you have a strong backup skill if you get in trouble :)

Greets,
Launcher shells are so heavy that you can only carry about 3-4 of them. So to effectivly lvl launcher you need to have a packer loaded with mats and basicly craft after every shot. Not that fun :)

Rocci's post covers it pretty well and welcome to Atys btw.

Atys needs more Rangers, there seems to be more showing an interest atm which is great but it is a hard path, please feel free to send me a PM if you have any questions and I will certainly try to help if I can.

Thanks for the replies everyone, I still think I'll give ranged a blast. :)

Just one thing, is the lack of animation when moving and firing normal? I'm sure that it is but I wanted to make sure that it wasn't just the machine I'm playing on. It's a little under speced right now.

I do think that ranged could use some more SWG inspired attacks, such as leaping for cover and sniping, giving maybe a cover bouns and plus to damage.

Actually you can carry 12-14 launcher ammoes, launcher, jewelry and LA. Downside is that you cannot carry anything else :)

Partially agree, with you...packers/crafting is a must with launcher.
With decent hit success you can take out about 2 fightrounds before need to craft.
