Being an exile from SWG(NGE) and to take a break from EVE-Online, I've been searching for some other good MMO games and found myself landed in SoR.
I know how immense and complicated this game is, so I took the risk and jump straight to a year subscription (I've done that on SWG, how worst can I get ?!?)
Believe me, I'm lousy on my feet........i follow the tutorial agent instruction to kill some dog (what's the name again?) n this is a breeze. But then here it comes the 'weeny dog' (sorry, the name again??). Boy, it is tough even in 7/10 Fight lvl, i can't even get it below 50% before I lie flat on the ground again.
I need some tips on combat. It seems like power-punch and dodging is kinda random to me.......or is it?
I do really enjoy SoR....just don't let the dog spoil my day :S

Having just done some starter missions myself, I can tell you that for some bizarre reason they can't all be done immediately after one another right at the beginning... For example, the magic one tells you to go kill a yubo with Acid 1, you'll ding and get 10sp. You go back to the Welcomer and they tell you to go get Heal 1 from the trainers... all well and good but it costs like 25 sp
So basically, you have to go do some stuff on your own to build up strength first

After you've killed your first mob (I assume its a Yubo, but which race are you?) then go do it again a few times until you've lvled up again, then once try and buy a nice weapon from the merchants (try and get something that is a "Choice" [whatever] because these should have better stats than the basic/fine stuff, and definately better than the Refugee gear you started with

Welcome to Atys Longhill,
I think the dog you are talking about is a Ragus or a Gingo.
If you are level 7 fighting you should be a match for a weeny type of both sorts of dogs, if you use a bigger weapon than a dagger. Go an check the weapon merchants, for a bigger weapon, like a sword, or a two handed sword. There are two weapon merchants, one is specialized in one handed the other in two handed weapons. If you don't find a long weapon, try a second dagger for your left hand.
The 'damage' stanza help you to do up to double damage, and works pretty fine. I normally combine it with a 'accurate attack' stanza. Then you should try to maximize the number of hit points you have. I found it very helpful, to have it at maximum all the time
I hope, this helps you atleast a bit.
Cheers
Trini

Welcome to Atys! *huggles*
The refugee islands, especially the missions are very poor standard compared with the mainland. The new refugee land which is coming "reeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeally soon" looks far superior to this.
It may well be worth spending some time exploring the mainland for a bit, then when the NPE is launched, make a new character and take it from there. However, its up to you

Welcome, mate, took a long time to find Ryzom

We were luckier (old farstarian here).
First buy a player made weapon, they are better than anythign you get at birth. It will make a world of difference. Then keep your sys info window always open to see the resists of the mob your fighting with.
I have noticed too thate 'weany <mobname>' were the toughest on newbie island, they also give some more xp. He might be just enough levels over you so that you miss it at lvl 7, but they can also be particularly resistant to slashing and be more sensible to magic, finally there s a possibility you got unlucky and it blinded you each time you tried.
However don't give up! If you cannot kill the doggie go back to some caprynis, birds, goaris, etc. If you're an old SWG-er you migth remember how hard was to kill those darn frogs around Eisley in the first days. This is still a game where you have no chance to master a proffession in less than a month, so prepare for a very slow pace advance while taking time to notice details around you
If still have problems feel free to give me a tell, I could join you with a char on newbie island and see what we can do together

Or check the link in my sign, we asked each others lots of such questions when we were newbies and some old solutions still lie there.

I want to thank you all for the helpful replies.
I'll certainly put some patient and study a bit more about the interface and controls.
I almost forgot to tell you my race (really hard to remember the actual name :S) but it all happened in the desert. And the dog I refer to is yubo....suckling yubo (rofl on the name

). And the one that give me problem is weeny gingo, yeah if I got the name right.
And someone mentioned about magic on it??

I initially want a barbarian type of char, and I totally forget about the magic levelling
Oh well, I just have to stay a bit longer in the refugee camp...........but........do I have to get minimum lvl20 for all skills i order to leave this place thru a bug-eye shortie?
Once again, I thank you all in advance.
..........jump back to game.

Heh, I was in Tatooine killing frogs with a sniping rifle lol. Just run around trees n snip backwards
But this technique could not apply here :S
meh, my head still spinning......

If you're in the desert then you're Fyros - the best and noblest of races. Eh? Whay? I'm biased? Who me?
Well the general consensus used to be to get to level 20 in the skills you want to use. These days, however, with low starter island population, the usual advice is go to the mainland as soon as you're comfortable with what you're doing. The mobs around the capital city (which is where you are sent to - Pyr if you're Fyros) are of similar levels to those on the starter isle. Main bonus of being in Pyr is there are more people about to help you.

No sweat there, thanks to the Open Skill System there is no "wrong" skilling.
You need only to amass 50 SP in any of the other Skills and buy the Magic Skill and some Magic-Aplifier-Gloves from a Merchant. (The one for 2H Melee Wapons I belive.)
But, in hopefully not so long a time all this will change with the new and improved Starter Island Deluxe !!!! (now with cherry flavor)
