So, how's the game? What can you compare it to in terms of other games on the market? I play WoW right now but am getting a little bored?

Welcome to Atys, wonbyone. Ryzom is wonderful. I've heard a number of people recently say (with tears welling up in their eyes) that it is quite similar to the original Star Wars Galaxies.
  • No character classes, you can switch skills anytime and do something else, and you can't nerf your character.
  • A branching skill tree (thanks to BM), noone to my knowledge crazy enough to have completed all of them, about 20 months after release.
  • Actions that you edit, configure and build yourself (19Mb download on that link - thanks to Grandma and Acri).
  • A world with seasons and weather that affect the resources available and the creature movement patterns.
  • Creatures that behave (for the most part) like they're alive, not just standing about or wandering back and forth along a little track - predators hunt, some almost as if in teams, herbivores scatter and some behave socially.
  • Every item of kit (with four rare notable exceptions) is crafted from the natural resources; found by hunting, digging or erm, gardening.
  • Unlike EQ or WoW, I believe, there are no instances or dungeons or quests. NPCs give you tasks, rather than quests, by which I mean that they are repeatable and pretty mundane. A few of these turn out to be parts of an Encyclopedia leading to a Rite, which is a bit like a quest.
  • The friendliest community you're likely to find, and CSR that respond so fast that they even come to you before you ask for them.
Like Red said above, don't spend your whole trial on the starter island. Better to come to the mainland and meet a few people, see a bit of the world. Then maybe even start a new character to go over the early levels in the relative safety of the isle, getting used to the actions more gradually.

If you want to compare it to WoW, let me give it a shot.

Ryzom isn't questbased like WoW, but instead harvesting/crafting based. A questbased game throws a new player right into the storyline, I had some problems first weeks to find my own reasons to *why* I had to harvest/craft. It has changed now though. There are quests in the game but they are really optional like most things.

Both games has pretty graphics, it is a matter of taste I think. I really like the alien feeling Nevrax's designer has given the armor.

The factions is set in stone in WoW, but we have quite a lot of flux here. You can self choose your faction/civilisation and change it later in the game.

The economics in WoW is pretty harsh, the crafters here are filthy rich and gifts to strangers are not uncommon. All equipment is produced by players, you wont find many epic swords found in the stomach of a bear.

Uh, what´s there to ad.
He says it all. :)

I´ve been convinced to try WondersOfWhoe by some friends of mine and well, I´m bored after 3 days... The biggest advantage I personaly see in SoR is, that there´s allways something to do if you want to. The only restriction is your own willingness to do something or not.
Lately I´ve begun crafting and, I never thought that it would happen, I´m quite enjoying it. If you don´t know how something works, then just ask in Region Chat on the Main Lands and surely someone will answer you.
If you die, don´t respawn imediately, ask for help first. Someone will come and ressurect you as long as someones within reach.
These rules aply to all Servercomunitys regardless of langauge, population or even InGame Allegiance. :D
That´s what I realy love about SoR!!!

Edit: Ah yes. :D The one thing that made me realy laugh ot loud were those creatures that carry Stuff around on them. :D When I´d killed my first small boar (Boarr <-German GM :D *LOL*), it dropped a chainmailwest right at my feet and I was like: "D´oh? Must´ve looked kinda strange. A boar in chainmail..." :D

*off to try and kill some Boarr on Leanon, maybe he´ll drop a nice suit of Armor? :D *

When I tried Horizons, I laughed at the money-carrying piglets. :D Where do they keep their little coin purses?

Anyway, one major difference between Ryzom and most other MMOs is the presence and support for roleplaying. It actually does exist, to a significant extent, in Ryzom. :)

Thanks so much for your replies. How odd, no flames or ugly comments. Obviously this isn't WoW. I'm gonna give this a try and see how it goes.

Thanks again.
