Just a few noob questions...

Hello all.
Something that always worries me about skill based games is that in order to be any use or good you have to be good at everything and because everyone can be everything anyone who has a roleplay idea in mind that involves picking one thing and sticking with it is going to end up very weak and worthless.
In SoR how long would a mostly melee (very little crafting or magic) homin last? What about mostly Magic with very little of anything else? Should I give up any hope of being a homin swords master with no interest in finger waving? Is both crafting and gathering a must?
It seems most of the new content for the game has been PvP, has there been any new PvE content? I don't mind PvP and enjoy it a lot but really prefer PvE. Also is it going to be a long long time before I get to have any of the outpost fun I've been reading about?
Thanks for the help.
