Starter Island

Something really needs to be changed about how new players are introduced into this game.
A new player needs people around to help them with questions and to ask about the game, and the current starter areas (esp. Zorai and Fyros) are dead.
It gives a very bad first impression and makes it rather boring

I don't know... I quite appreciate having a less populated starting area where I can fumble around and learn how to walk without tripping over my feet before I venture out in public. I think what would really help the most is to have the Starter Islands connected to the capital regions for /region chat and merchants.

Newbie island is a weakness in the game, I am sure it puts a lot of players off before they get to the 100 times better mainland :)

I hope its changed soon, would be great.

It may be a good idea to get rid of the starter islands and just have the new players start on the main land. I see a use for them if we had 100s of new players every week but we don't. :(

yep, they worked well when the game launched, but not now.

what would be nice is if more older players had an alt and just spent an hour or two there each week. great for stocking merchants and helping out, and boxing with the kipee's is always entertaining :p

it scares me to think how many ppl download game, spend 30 mins getting frustrated and confused on the island and uninstall without ever having seen the real game :( I know its a lot cause i sell 20+ pikes a week there and sure dont see 20 new zorains..

Exactly

and i still think a lot of people dont notice the region tab.

I think either, as suggested, have region connected to the mainland zone (that will at least help a lot more)

Or, have it like most other games where the newbi zone is on the mainland, but a small area of to one side, closed in with cliffs and a single path leading out. Would only need one town and a small playing field

Fyros Starter island is no longer dead.

You can buy q20 choice light, medium and heavy armour. As far as melee weapons are concerned they are also available at a similar standard: long swords daggers and amps :)

The island is occupied by the Elders of Atys right now. New players are in good hands.

What I feel the starter island should do, and what I feel it hasn't done effectively enough is to introduce the background story to those new players who might not have bothered reading the lore on the site and thus allow them to make more informed decisions. Recently I have been seeing foreign guilds recruiting unsuspecting Fyros newbies en masse. When I approached some of these newly guilded Fyros and asked whether or not they knew they had joined a guild that might wage war against their own nation and kill its citizens... few of them knew what I was talking about. I find this rather alarming as any practical attempt to counter the situation would just lower oneself to its level and make the problem even more widespread.

As someone who just started the game this past week, I totally disagree. I've been involved in MMOs for years now, and one of the best features in any MMO (IMO) is an isolated starting point to allow us newbies the time to explore and figure out how to play without the interference of veterans. Sure, some aspects may be confusing and not self-explanatory, but I enjoy a challenge... ;)

Also, on the flip-side, I've hated the annoyances of being a veteran stuck in a "General" channel hearing the newbies ask the same questions ad infinitum. I'd hate to hit mainland in Ryzom and see the "Region" channel filled with newbie-island questions!

On the topic though... at what point does one leave the Starter Island in Ryzom? I've invested ~10 hrs into the game over the past few nights since I signed up for the 7-day trial, and I find that:

a.) level 2 mobs still kick my butt (admittedly, I'm only Fight 2 and Magic 14);
b.) there's still plenty of crafting I need to do before I could make items even close in stats to the ones NPC vendors are selling (Craft ~7?)
c.) I'm still getting significant experience (~900/node) foraging the Choice mats I find (Foraging 22?)

When should I leave? I don't have any real compelling reason to do so yet...
