Heyas, been playing with a buddy on the seven day trial.
We've figured out pretty much how the crafting and foraging works. The melee part was fairly easy to get going as well, since it's more often than not an 'me smash!' kind of playstyle heh. ;o)

Magic though, whooo boy. How the heck are we supposed to level it?
The fart bomb that one starts with does about as much harm as walking up to an animal and saying a few choice harsh words. >_<
Merely pisses them off if you get my drift.

I just don't get it. You buy a melee weapon, you whack 'em down, no sweat.
You try and 'nuke' something down though, and they resist and interrupt and you feel lucky to survive. o_O
Is there any way to make that acid fart do more than like, 18 damage at the starting levels?

Are we even supposed to 'be' casters in this? Or is melee like, mandatory?
Leveling magic through healing is a real pain in the ass since xp ain't given unless you heal when the fight happens, AND some damage must have been had on the healers target in that same fight. >_<

Please tell me I'm missing something fundamental. I badly want to rely on magic, much prefer it to melee, but dang if it doesn't feel crippled in this game.
I'm loving the game and the mature community, but magic so far is a no go and a gamekiller. :o (

Please excuse my jumping back and forth in the post; need my morning coffee heh, oh and; thank you in advance to any answers and for taking the time.

Well you know how the old song goes, you're always the first to die.

Mages seem to rip at higher levels (which I am not yet).
You need a good pair of magic amplifiers and patience for a few levels.
Standing as far away as possible from the target let you land one or two more spells too. Use light armor, nothing else - cause other armors makes casting slow and costly.

*LOL* Nope you´re not realy "missing" something. I think you´re just a wheee bit to overenthusiatic. :D
Don´t try and kill MOBs that are to high above your own level in Magic.
The color and the Stars give a general indication of lvl-Range of the MOB.
Green + 1 Star, 2 Stars, etc. (later there will be blue. yellow, orange, red and purple) The more Stars the harder to kill the beast.
So just stick to the small Yubos and work your way up the food chain.
Later INGame it´ll change drastically and Magic will be far superior to Melee.
Much to the chargrin of most Waponfanatics. ;)
So just don´t give up and don´t overthrow yourself with MOBS that are now "too big" for your skill.
If you´ve got crafting mastered, then why don´t you buy the crafting plan for Magic Amplifiers and build yourself a more powerfull pair?
Just forage the right materials, build them and fire away!!! :D

Most of all HAVE FUN!!!!

yeps as said start small and work your way up. suckling yubo's should be your first target. target one thats a long (45-50m) way away (once you have clicked something u can right click in the compass window to see how far away it is).

wearing anything but light armor will nerf your ability to cast, if you dont have some amps yet make sure you unequip your weapon as well, but buy amps asap (best stats possible on the island are approx +64% bonus - right click the amps in the merchant to see this). There are lots of us with alts who routinely pop to the island and put some things for sale in the merchants but sometimes there will be nothing around, even the npc ones will be better than nothing though.

good luck :-)

Hello! I'm new as well and spent a few rounds dying when trying to level magic, finally I bought a dagger and leveled magic and fight at the same time for a bit, when my magic was higher, I switched to my amps and I no longer have a problem.

Yep it just requires a bit of patience and if you're like me and played FF, you've got more than enough patience to spare lol...

Welcome to Atys didgeroo and buddy! :P *huggles*

As for the magic, it can be low damage for the first few levels, I advise getting some consitution (hp) through melee skills a little first, equip your magic amplifiers (if you have some). Player made ones are way better than NPC ones, and can up to double the speed and power of the spells.

Also once you hit, I think its about lvl 5 in magic, you can get acid 2/cold 2 which hits for far more than the origional spells.

Also try messing around with editing the action, take out the time credit I would advise. Of course you'll need another credit stanza bought from the trainers to replace it (something like extra range credit), which will mean you have faster spells at slightly lower range.

Good to have the fear spell too. The old addage for soloists at low levels is nuke-nuke-fear-nuke-nuke-fear.

A good set of Amps is not easy to come by on the refugee islands. Yell in region and see if anyone there can make them. Nice Amplifiers makes a world of difference.

Thanks a bunch people. ^_^ Magician Apprentice and now it's definately a whole other game.
I guess I found it wierd or almost buggy the initial 'nukes' was so extremely low compared to melee.
Wish we had deeper foresight in up and coming actions and stanzas in trees we are working on.

And no, can't craft my own gear much. I meant that I've figured out how the system works. :o )
A very nice crafter got both me and my buddy new gloves etc though, and you know, that made a huge difference. <3

But in the end, yeah; I suspected it was simply a matter of being patient and realizing it'd get better later on (as you've all confirmed it does).

Anyways, up and coming defensive / healer magician with the occasional nukes mixed in for a more spicy soup of magic.
Thanks again people, you rock!
