Hi there Homins!
I was one of the first folks to login to Ryzom back forever ago when it hit the shelf. I was lucky enough to get into a good guild at the onset, Comitatus Praetorian for those that recall that far back. Well, this game was just slightly buggy back then and then WoW hit the shelf... Needless to say, myself and a majority of CP went over to WoW.
It has taken me over a year but I have finally grown bored with WoW and now I'm back! Well, kinda. I created a 7-day Free Trial account to test the waters before I dove back into another monthly subscription.
Ryzom is such a breath of fresh air compared to WoW. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed WoW, enough so that I paid them two monthly subs for over a year(my girl plays too).
At any rate, i've got a few more days on this free trial at which point I think I will either activate this account or reactivate my old account. The biggest challenge that I face in returning to Ryzom is my girl. We are also playing the free 30 day trial of EQ2. Having very similar gameplay to WoW has attracted her very much where as learning the very different system in Ryzom has made her frown.
So, in closing, I hope very much to be able to convince her to stick with Ryzom. We have a few chars on the Matis island, much to my Zorai loving dismay, that we will continue to experiment with. Unfortunately, 7 days won't be enough time for casual players like us to reach the levels that we would be comfortable heading over to the mainland but were trying!

Things have changed a lot since back in the day - coming over to mainland is pretty much possible as soon as you worked out how to moverenots wrote:Unfortunately, 7 days won't be enough time for casual players like us to reach the levels that we would be comfortable heading over to the mainland but were trying!

Oh my, its DoubleTap... When I was browsing the forums b4 I created my trial and I saw that you were still here... Hehe, good stuff man. Glad to see this game has been able to keep people around this long.vguerin wrote:I remember C.P. quite well... back when our server had RP at events

Really? Hmm. So you no longer need 20s across the board at least? Maybe we will head over tonight then.sprite wrote:Things have changed a lot since back in the day - coming over to mainland is pretty much possible as soon as you worked out how to move
Re: Canceled Nov '04
Nope, you can basically come to the mainland right away if you like. The starter island is more of a gameplay/controls tutorial than an actual newbie levelling place. I brought one of my alts over to mainland as soon as I made it, and havent had any problem levelling up.

I think I might have to disagree with you, but only for newer players and maybe people that have been playing another game for over a year. For Ryzom vet's, read: alts, I can understand it being very easy to wander over to the mainland.
But for those of us who have forgotten certain things, or never knew them, the mainland can be rough.
I just came over to Yrkanis last night and the following observations are based on our, thats my girlfriend and myself, experiences on the Matis starting island on our first time back in Ryzom since Nov '04.
The quests on the island give you a good idea how you will need to operate on the mainland.
You can wander around much easier on the islands as well. You still have a shot to make it to some guards even when the biggest ragus on the island is chasing you but if you walk in the wrong direction out of one of the mainland towns... One chomp is all it takes.
Mats for leveling crafting early on are very readily available at the vendors on the islands as many people sell all their drops to the players. Finding other sources for harvesting just by random prospecting is much easier on the island as well.
It was funny now that I look back when I walked up to a Suckling Capryni (forgive me if I mispell anything, too lazy to look it up atm) and gave it a whack with my newly purchased 2-handed sword. Completely forgot that the mentality of the mobs on the mainland is just slightly different than on the island... Needless to say the two Roaming brothers of his turned and stepped on me...
At anyrate, I think I would still recommend that you reach 20 in at least one skill on the island before you come over. Once you have made it to 20 in any skill you should have enough knowledge to avoid silly mistakes on the mainland.
7 days is up Saturday evening. I still don't know if I will be continuing my subscription.
I can always reactivate my old account but I remember being ticked at the skills that I had chosen way back then and I'm pretty sure that I don't have any items/money on my char either... /shrug
We'll see...

yep's social mob behaviour is the #1 newbie killer i think
might be nice if the kami/karavan npc gave a little warning before whisking homins off but then again the lessons best learnt tend to be when you end up eating dirt

Re: Canceled Nov '04
Has Ryzom ever done a "respec" for their characters at any point? I'm curious as I'm still considering reactivating my old Zorai but I know I was unhappy with many of the skills/spells that I had purchased on that char.
