How are things on the mainland?

This is probably my third attempt at Ryzom. But to be honest, I really didn't give the game a fair chance.

I've been playing World of WarCraft for a while off and on there as well. I just haven't really been able to get into that game. Don't get me wrong, I *love* the graphics, the interface, the story, but I'm afraid I just can't get passed all the stupidity. I'm not sure if its just the internet or because WoW has a lot of younger players.

One thing I've noticed in a lot of online games is that whole game to some people is just window dressing for them. Like in WoW, most people could care less about the story or anything in else in game. Their only purpose is be the best and show off with their fancy glowing 6-foot long sword. Or as a level 60 go into a level 30 area and kill everyone there.

For me, stuff like that ruins the game. WoW has RP servers and RP-PvP servers but nothing seems to be enforced unless you take on the role of tattletale and report everything.

I'm still on the starter island. I'm just trying to figure out the interface and that sort of thing at first. I couldn't even kill a Yubo last night so I'm thinking this is going to take a while.

I'm just wondering what the rest of the world is like here in this game. I'm hoping, its something different.

I would advise to join the mainland asap. Everything on the island is on the mainland. but in the mainlnad there are more people who can help you out in real-time. and teach you things, that over the forums isnt easy.

As to how the cumminty work. Ryzom has an unbeliveable (good) communtiy in comparason to other MMORPG's and thats generally agreed. :D there is alot of people who RP, and the majority of players do care about the world. How us as players play the game dictates what happens to the overall story :D

The Ryzom interface is easy to use. just need to know what to look for. there's a fairly decent help/starter guide here which would be a great helping hand.

If you're ingame when i am just type "/tell tyilin" and ill be more than willing to come share my (supposed) knowladge :D

Hi,

Thanks for the reply! I'm definately going to give this game a fair chance. I need to actually figure out the interface. Took me a bit to get used to not having the "WASD" keys to move but I've read that you can remap the keys so I don't think that will be a problem. I just want to get a little familiar with the interface before I go onto the mainland.

hey hey, nes =)

like mr. tyilin says, join the mainland asap. nights can get cold and lonely in the training grounds, as u might have already found out.

myss would hesitate to say asap, though. time spent on the training grounds is the best lesson learnt in playing ryzom because there are very little strings attached, very little obligations. if you go to mainland before your time, some wily wily homins might try to recruit your services before you can blink twice =p

thats not to finger point or say that all homins are like that... but exercise caution. homins on mainland can be a bit like yubos... they're everywhere, have lots of history, act innocent, and then they might pee on you just when u think ur beginning to understand them.

but, enjoy! i'm sure u will, speshially if u go thru a romp in the jungle with mr. tyilin =p

Well, ok, now you guys and gals have me worried... "Beware of strangers bearing gifts!" :)

Do you imply that people (some people) have ulterior motives besides being friendly and helping you out? For the most part, I haven't run into that on the other online games I've played. Usually people who help are people who really just want to be helpful. I have run into the occasional scam though.

Community is cool in that respect, so no scams or whatever are to be expected.

I think dear Myss tried to tell you that if you don't take care you'll be in a guild 10 secs after you're arrived to mainland via teleport ;) Which can be quite allright, although I myself would spend a little time reading the guilds section from the forums and spending some time with the guild wanting to recruit you before making the final decision.

Ok, I understand! Had me worried a bit there. Yeah, I'm not to keen on joining guilds, right away that is. It's good to know though.

I think Alibooma is the current expert on "how to join a guild" as he spent probably 2 or so months looking into different guilds all over the game with different play styles. Not to discount others opinions or anything here... but I don't think anyone's gone through the amount of effort he has with this specific topic in mind.
