Whats in a Word?

First of all this isnt supposed to offend/annoy or ask rules to be changed, just an observation.

For those that dont me in real life im not the oldest of players (im "young" at 19) and so i guess my views on such things will be different to say a player of twice or more of my age.

On the way home from work yesterday I was reading a national paper - "The Independent" Its not really that much of an interesting paper. but i was bored and my MP3 player ran out of battery. I was scouting through a few of the pages and came across a doubble page of nonimations - i think oscers. Where two british actresses where up for a noination, after while reading through what one of the noninations - Dame judy Dench (i think) - had said to sumone/sumthing (it was 1.20AM i was tired) "F them F them F them" - Using full words. Not only was there "vulgar" lang. on that page but other words of similir on other pages. - Personaly i was not offended. I Hear words such as the ones used frequently. But i was thiknking about people who would be offended.

Now i know that it is agaisnt the Code, on both the forums and in the Game to use vulgar/swear words as such. I maybe asking this question completely out of line... But why? Why make such a deal over words? (the word itself, NOT how it is used)

I know that if a vulgar word is DIRECTED AT A HOMIN then that is complety out of order. But if a homin was to use a word directed at him/herself Or at sumthing that has happened. Is that such an issue? I mean if a national newspaper can print such words then cant gamers? (again i repeat. i am NOT asking for rules to be changed just want sum ideas to broden my Mind :) )

Another MMORPG has a filter which automaticly stops text from sending if a vulgar/swear word is used. Is this a good/better aproach?

Is it that sometimes to accurately portray how we feel, is it better to use a swear word?

Who here is genuinely offended when a word of such is used? - ok maybe thats the wrong way to put it, but u get what i mean.

Should we take a more hard line approch when it comes to such? Is it ever acceptable to use such words?

If u have thoughts/Ideas on the why's and wherefores please feel free to post.

Much love and Peace (execpt in OP Battles ;) )

Tyilin

P.S Keep it clean

offending people is against the law, plain and simple

I don't have any problem with "swear words." I do have a problem with words that are derogatory directly towards some kind of person, such as a three-letter word beginning with F.

I would love to see shorthand/"txt talk" censored, though. :D

Gotta agree with that :)

Anyway, regarding another MMOG using the filter, I played one until recently and in the chat for example *%$" would appear and the reader would ask what the symbols meant, so the author would write the letters again with a space between each, and then the word could be read clearly.

Banned words included, God and Nip, weird thing was, you could not say God, but you could say Devil....go figure :)

Regarding the Guardian, they didn't author the F words you read, they were reporting a story and being a newspaper, I guess they have a certain pride in their accuracy, so I guess "M" (Judy Dench :p ) has a bit of a potty mouth :) .

I have mixed feelings about using language in a MMOG, sometimes they only expression that accruately conveys your feelings happens to be a "swear" word, but it will offend someones sensitivities and I feel that, if people dont want to read profanities, then they shouldn't be subjected to them.

I dont see a reason to "unban" them, they are not needed for communication and are a sign of immaturity to want to foist them on the general population in a MMOG.

because the game has a universal rating maybe, and not 17+ (or whatever it is these days) swearing is fine and dandy for adults, but not for children i think most would agree.

and tbh being that offensive is not necessary whatever age you are, ppl should make a little effort to express themselves and not rely on swearing or to quote CoM, using n00b every other word*

*yeah yeah i know, i'll see u in the pr noob. there said it for you

I will tell you what my wife tells my 7 yr old son "people swearing means they dont know enough words to speak properly". I think that kinda sums it up for me.

genrally i dont mind swearing but, there are some younger players in ryzom and also those who dont like it, alot of other MMORGs have filters but the way people type their easy to get around and everyone knows that they mean, i prefer our way of doing it and in genral most people are okay and stick to the rules. just my feelings on the matter
Edit: nice one seti, i think thats a really nice way of putting it

Haha, Seti... That's funny, considering you have to wear headphones when I'm in vent. Lot's of love you stinky b*.

My two cents. I personally think it's silly that there are "swear" words. The only reason that they're swears is because they offend people for some reason. It's silly tradition that makes them. I'm not trying to invalidate peoples' concerns regarding the issue, I think it's fine if you don't want to hear it because it offends you, just the fact that it does (not really a fault of the offended) is kinda silly. (Again, to keep people from hating me more than they do sometimes ;) I'm not trying to put down people who are offended).

Honestly, I dont mind cussing. I do it all of the time in RL. But, I dont do it in game a lot except for an occasional "damn" or "wtf". Cussing offends people, and in a family guild like mine especially. I think a censor thingy would be good. But like you Tyllin I'm in the younger gamer generation. Um I'll stop cause this is making no sense-my mind wandered.
