Now a few questions on missions/quests

Well I finally made it to the mainland and have been taking a look around. Also got some tips from a few helpful people.

My main questions now are:

1) Are missions all that I have to look forward to in the way of questing and adventures?

2) Is there in fact a more robust questing system than I'm seeing now and missions are the key to unlocking it?

3) If there is not...how does the story in the game advance...or even jump out and catch your attention?

I asked the above because if the level of NPC interraction I'm seeing so far is all there is to this game then its not for me.

I have heard of the huge battles for outposts etc. But after games like WoW(yes I know I'm not supposed to use that acronym here) and COH where missions have a compelling backstory that at least compels you to do them, I'd be very disappointed if all I had to look forward to was a list of kill this, deliver this and not even any reasons behind why corporal so-and-so really cares about sluggish Shookis.

I'm not really knocking the game, but I do want to seem like I'm actually doing something worthwhile. Not just endlessly killing critters or fed-exing stuff to and fro. There was no real NPC help in the main city or suggestions on what to pursue.

Well any help you can offer would be appreciated.

for the moment, yes. There are a bit more slightly elaborated ones, known as rites, but thier number is limited and they can be only done once, so you get your reward.

Nevertheless, the next Big Thing is ryzom ring, a set of tools and a platform to create content (sorry Jy) be new quests, scenarios, so both players and Nevrax will be able to streamline content and the possibilities seem endless...

2) Is there in fact a more robust questing system than I'm seeing now and missions are the key to unlocking it?

See my previous answer

3) If there is not...how does the story in the game advance...or even jump out and catch your attention?

The quests are limited with regard to the story... they may give you some knowledge, but most of it is given off line / off band, and with official CSR events.

I asked the above because if the level of NPC interraction I'm seeing so far is all there is to this game then its not for me.

A lot of players have high hopes with the Ring. If Nevrax delivers, there may be what you want. That said, Ryzom does not stand over for its quating system. YEt, even with Ring, content creators are needed, and that's the risk such an addition presents, given the fact that the ring is also supposed to be a revenue income for Nevrax.

You are not alone with this. Rites seemed to be promising, but their development was stopped for several reasons. First, Nevrax decided to focus their efforts and resources on pther gameplay aspects, and rite development was stopped (they were bugged, incomplete, it was never clear which ones could be completed and which not, thus creating frustration, etc.

It is also possible that the spagetthi code could prevent NEvrax developpers to create new rites at a pace (players would cpmplete them way faster that they could be created) and even internally Nevrax would need easier and more robust tools for content creation.

I'm not really knocking the game, but I do want to seem like I'm actually doing something worthwhile. Not just endlessly killing critters or fed-exing stuff to and fro. There was no real NPC help in the main city or suggestions on what to pursue.

Don't get me wrong.. Ryzom quests and tasks are that. kill this craft that, kill those, deliver and that's it. Used mainly to grind fame. Even the tribes fame is, for the moment, basically useless, unless you get negative fame where you are KoS. Just stating that this may change, but Ryzom Ring is still in development.

Hope this helps,

Nope. You can find your own quests and adventures. Part of the buety of this game is that you can do whatever you want. But it requires a little bit of thought on your part, not a prompt from an npc :)
2) Is there in fact a more robust questing system than I'm seeing now and missions are the key to unlocking it?
Missions are the key to fame and encylopedia entries. With encylopedia entries comes a variety of things including new crafting plans, added hp/focus/stam. etc. Think of it as gaining knowledge because you have shown you are worthy to gain it.
3) If there is not...how does the story in the game advance...or even jump out and catch your attention?
You are the story. There are temples dotted about that can give you some story, there are events, there is the lore on the website, and encylopedia entries do to.
I asked the above because if the level of NPC interraction I'm seeing so far is all there is to this game then its not for me.
This game isn't for everyone. It's different from every other mmo I've played (and I'd argue in all the right ways). The developers want you to think more, to make your own choices about what you want to do, and to team up with other people.

But, if this game isn't for you that's fine too.

I personally didn't like COH's missions (in comparision to ryzom's) because of this. How many times can a factory be cleared out by hero's in a day of villians? While it involves you deeply the things you do in that game don't really affect anything in the game.
I'm not really knocking the game, but I do want to seem like I'm actually doing something worthwhile. Not just endlessly killing critters or fed-exing stuff to and fro. There was no real NPC help in the main city or suggestions on what to pursue.

The best advice that anyone can give you is to team up with people. Try to explore what the game can offer you without some spoon feeding going on. It still might turn out that the game isn't right for you. That's ok. Not everyone wants to think about why there doing something :)

as above. Ryzom really isnt about preset missions and quests in the slightest. It's much more of a social experience, living in a world that is alive, making a name for yourself, defining yourself what you will do not being told by a npc.

can be a bit of a shift in focus from other games but it's why many of us play :)

Like the others said, in Ryzom it is the players that make the story, not NPCs. As a result, Atys is a far more dynamic, ever-changing world than most MMOs. It is more about finding your place in Atys and living it rather than playing out some pre-determined storyline.

Thanks to everyone for the replies and helpful answers.

I'm thinking that this game isn't for me right now.

Its actually not so much that I NEED a pointing finger saying go here and do this, but it seems like a bit too much of a grind to just hunt, forage and maybe craft while we wait for Ryzom Ring. That seems like something that should have been in place at game launch.

I personally believe that a fantasy themed setting like Ryzom DOES need a bit more in terms of fleshing out inside the game world than simply reading a backstory on a webpage.

As a player of EVE online for several months now, I do understand the feeling of freedom and power over my own destiny that comes from determining my own path. In fact I don't do very many missions from NPCs there...simply because there is so much else to do especially when you're in a small corp looking to put up a small space staion etc.(sorry for the ramble).

There just seems a need in Ryzom for more of a choice as to if you want to persue a strictly personal goal and if you want to get more involved with the storyline. Its missing and I think it does the game a huge injustice since the character advancement system is so rich. It's just not my niche I suppose. Maybe I'll check back when the Ring is in place.

Thanks again for the help given. I'll be cancelling my account tonight.

hehe good luck in your next adventure. but as my passing shot you really cant judge what has been going on in the game for the last 18 months after being here a few days.

The lore is very much in the game, there have been many events which push the story forward, some like the temple's you might have noticed dotted around lasted weeks and required a concerted effort from us all (we had to build them). This was a recent one and tbh its nice to have a bit of normality before the faction war really kicks off with the spires.

Ryzom Ring? not actually bothered at all. Will be nice and fun but i am plenty busy enough on Atys as it is :)

Saga of Ryzom isn't all about quests and missions. It does provides an ever changing environment that you can do a lot of things in. You do have to work at it, but it is very rewarding.

To give an example, this is what I did on Saturday.
  • Hunted Na-jab and Cratcha in void.
  • Helped design a wedding dress for an upcoming wedding.
  • Role-played in an event that will be developing over the weeks "Rumours in the Desert".
  • Worked to increase my fame doing a few missions.
  • Rode around the world of Atys taking a recruit to each of the teleports. Thanks Sashtan, was great fun
  • Helped new recruits to level and train.
Sunday was equally full but totally different.
