Jessica Could Have Been Banned!

The following are some statements attributed to Jessica at the Austin Game Conference, Oct 27 - 28.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

“I’m sick of the same old game mistakes.” Jessica ranted, then sited some examples.

Ex 1- Coding before designing. Jessica talked about working with developers who had two years of code — and three pages of design. “This is why you pay me ten thou a month.”
Ex 2- Changing after launch. Here’s a thought… why not change before the launch, before you lose customers? That way, people know what they’re buying!
Ex 3- Ignoring the community. The people on the forum are the vocal minority, but they still represent a game’s community. Mulligan also mentioned the player-dev interaction at the recent BlizCon, or lack thereof. World of Warcraft Community Relations outright told their customers that they wouldn’t interact with them.
Ex 3- Launching before ready. Mulligan’s favorite case is when games come out with no customer service tools. “We’ll do it after launch when things calm down.”

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

It is fortunate that such statements were not made in these forums otherwise she too might have been banned!

It is interesting to note that she seems to advocate listening to her customers. This is odd since she apparently did quite the opposite in the case of Ryzom. This of course may have not been the case since she could have been over-ruled by the other powers that be at Nevrax. Has Jessica been silenced under threat of losing her job? Has Xavier censured her too? Hopefully this is not the case. Perhaps she was simply misquoted at the Conference.

Well, WHY do you think she ranted about just that?
BECAUSE these were the Mistakes Nevrax made in the past, and she´s been hired to correct them.
I for once see no sign of her NOT listening to us.
Just that her responsetime is a little slow.

Well the thing that most keeps me here (and is been doing so for almost 2 years) is the open communication from Nevrax to the community. They also seem to be listening to the communities suggestions.

- This game has private chat channels wich are moderated by the gm's.
- Sevral suggestions have been implemented and they have listened to the community.
° In may the community was asking for a balancing of the pvp, Nevrax did it
° More recently a lot of players were complaining (was more like a few players complaing a lot in my opinion :p ) about the pvp and the upcoming updates beeing pvp oriented. Nevrax listened and pushed the chapter III back a week or 2 in order to review it and introduce more PvE content.
° Nevrax asked the players opinion about racial animations.
° Before open beta 1, the closed beta testers were communicating directly to the devs (yes we were e-mailing them, chatting with them, playing with them .. guess why the beta took so long j/k :D )
- A lot of the game and the development schedule is planned ahead, some things even over a year ahead. Nevrax made a game and a game engine witch is very flexible. It resulted in a very high development cost and a lot of time beta testing the game. It even took 'em on the edge financial disaster, but they kept going. We are currently seeing the results of it. Outposts, events like we see int episode II and most of all Ryzom ring would not be possible without careful planning. Even a second release of Ryzom (yes Ryzom 2) was already planned before this game went gold (even a few futures are released already, like the ability to transfer characters from Ryzom to Ryzom 2).
All this careful planning doesn't allow Nevrax to respond immidiatly to the communities suggestions, remarks, ect ... But with a few weeks (or months if its something thats a bit lower on the to do list) of patience you'll see the communities suggestions an remarks implemented.

Everybody dreams. Everybody plans. Not everybody delivers.

I think I'd like Jessica a lot, in person. She seems to have fun with what she does.

The vocal minority she speaks of is all too true. Unfortunately, it's true in almost all facets of life. More unfortunate, the quiet majority is often swayed by the vocals.

Oh, and I want ninjas and pirates in Ryzom!

-- These random thoughts were brought to you by Calana's odd brain. Certainly feel free to ignore them and move on with life.

Oh yeah, and go read the articles out there about the Rant (with Jessica), such as at mmorpg.com. :)

praise Nevrax ?
about PvP: dunno, i still get killed from one shot (2k HP), and it seems that who fires first, wins.
about chapter3: hehe, right.. they listen players (they knew about "anti PvP" "movement" way before EP2) - personally, i'm hoping they patch global FvF in "yesterday".
animations: first poll, 50/50, they didnt like the result and made another "poll".
second poll - much better, animations are a go, lot of whining about not really getting a choice in that matter (server side in-game switch). no communication from Nevrax.

"planning year ahead" is good as long as they do it right. reason to delay chapter3 shows that they made mostly PvP content (you words, they adding PvE content).

post was ment to be informative. take it as whine/rant/flooding if you like. cant stop you.

Well first off you only have 2k hp out of a 4750 maximum, second you should think about getting jewels with a good resistance bones could change a lot. You can have upto 80% protection vs magic spells, wich means a 3000 damage shot (wich is the maximum damage a shot can do) will only do about 600 damage. Thats a lot of shots before someone with 4000+ hp gets killed.
Ofcource the items with these stats are pretty priceless and only a handful of people around will able to obtain it. Still it isn't hard to find about 50% overall protection on spells, wich will make you able to take one more hit.

With every update there will always be people who complain and others who are happy, but the thing is they are moving ahead.

Well you can choose the type of animations now, I think thats the best solution anyway.

ofcource, my mistake not to be 245 in melee.
btw, protection for racial spells are IMHO unbalanced.
how ? firgure it out yourself.

you missed my point. EP2 was _full_ PvP, Nevrax failed completely providing non-PvP content in EP2. there was a few threads /conserns before EP2 that Ryzom will be full PvP. Jessica said that its not their plan to turn Ryzom to full PvP. then they launched EP2. oops. then came global FvF announcement. double oops.

i'm staying away from Ep2, as are others.
i'm (me personally) forced to stay away from EP2 to enjoy game.
i would like to take part in EP2 but i cant.
diplomatic solution ? peace in PvP zone ? yeah right. then comes bored player and all hell breaks lose. "At least i'm having fun" said PvP'er.
Well you can choose the type of animations now, I think thats the best solution anyway.
dont you follow news ?
that choice is going away when they finally patch in new animations
if you dont like them by then, then learn to live with them or leave.
btw, leaving is you choice... as is not likeing them.
