Another newbie review...

What I love:

Stanzas – the whole system is nifty cool.

The price of mounts, and general scarcity of them.

The animals.

The material variety, and the effects they have on things you make.

The fact that all the races are the same, ability-wise.

The idea of fighting a war against giant bugs from the center of a living planet.

I love the hand-drawn look of the in-game maps.

The fact that you have to walk everywhere at least the first time.

The fact that traveling between regions is exceedingly difficult.

What I like:

The fighting is interesting, at least for melee and somewhat for magic.

The fact that you can queue an action.

The difficult level gaining – nicely offsets the fact that you can learn anything.

The ability to learn anything.

What I don’t like:

The missions are exceedingly boring and meaningless.

The harvesting system, while creative, is annoying to me. I just do not like the green bubble idea at all.

Some creatures respawn very quickly, and it encourages camping to a high degree.

I do not like how you can use defensive magic skill points for offensive magic stanzas and actions.

I do not like how you do not lose all your stuff when you die.

What I hate:

I hate the towns – at least the Tryker towns. The Tryker towns are very boring, and all look the same.

I hate the NPCs in the towns. Some are useful, most just walk around randomly, and are nothing but background filler. They do not even talk! They annoy me to an extreme extent – I would rather have the towns be barren than to have 50,000 mutes wandering aimlessly. Give them something to say! Give them something to do!

I hate the teleporters – they should have stairs you just walk up or down, not teleporters that take forever to load (even a few seconds is annoying).

I hate how you cannot go from one room to another in the same building via the teleporters without exiting first (the exception being the newbie island towers).

I hate the combat-orientation of the game. Either you poke things or else you get things to make things to poke things. That basically sums it up – either you fight, or you support fighters.

I HATE how you cannot sit in chairs.

I hate how you cannot make chairs.

I hate how you cannot eat.

I HATE how you can just swim everywhere in the Lakelands – I can go anywhere easily, and I am only level 40! There needs to be sea monsters, and boats.

Most of what I hate relates to lack of depth beyond just “kill the yubo, gain exp, kill another yubo”… sure, there is much more to it than that, but so many missing details…

Oh, and I hate how you cannot "forget" actions and stanzas to get the points back (or at least drop your exp the equivelent amount) so that you can learn other ones in their place.

Well thought thru post...

Some of the quirks with SoR are also what makes it unique... new/different company than others with a unique (maybe even out there) plan... Some things they do grandly, others to a lesser degree.

Enjoy your time here...

I agree to most of your points. This is stands out the most, I think.

As a Matis I was very frustrated when I got to the mainland, for a long time I felt trapped in town. Venturing out too far got me killed everytime, damn them gingos! Now however, I can travel to new places by myself, but always keeping an eye out. The sunset in the forest is worth dying for.

How easy and carefree life must have been for the young Trykers, being able to swim everywhere. How I envy the softness of skin without scars.

EDIT: And welcome to Ryzom!

Ah.... Tryker is a bit different in this then the other countries. For some reason the devs have put all hostile mobs in Lagoons of Loria and Bounty Beaches, so while Liberty Lake is quite easy to swim, those areas are known as the worst on the whole of Atys.

And realize that the tracks of land are not even close to the size in other countries, the amount of wildlife it feeds is about the same....

So swimming may be easy, as soon as you walk you are looked upon as lunch from nearly every angle. Tryker lands teaches you how to sneak and how to die if you desire to leave the water and the main area.

Enjoy your lengthy stay in the lakelands, getting out could prove to be hard.

I agree with most the things you mentioned.

The one i highlighted is something i think really needs looking into. These towns and cities are supposed to be busling with life. It should be to the extent that having a convo in around chat should be difficult with other NPC convos going on. Even some npcs haggling at the the merchants i think would be absolutely fantastic!!

EDIT: Welcome to atys :)
