This is a spinoff from another thread. Apparently the existance of civilians on Atys are not to be heard of, neither in the lore nor in the gamebox according to some sources.
Well...
There got to be, I'm not playing a military gal. I read an interview with David Cohen Corval and his influences. He mentioned some sci-fi, anime and sci-fi, plus Sir David Attenborough.
So that inspired me and my Ulani Viccio is foremost dedicated to the study of plants due to parts in her background. I haven't come around and RP'd it just yet (other than just "picking" lots of psykoplas) but as soon as R2 comes, I'm building her a laboratorium and a greenhouse. Maybe the Matis botanists and biochemists one day will make a difference.
As a faithful Matisian she is awaiting Jena's return. She even tried to help out with the digging in the desert despite the teleporters warning, but felt she was of no use and had to return from the dangers.
She's guilded with a band of Trykers in Fairhaven and enjoys their refreshing view on things, and some of their opinions messes up Ulani's conception of the world. But I admit, she is still a bit concerned over some of her small friends religious doubts.
Is this a crazy crusader you see before you? I hope not, if I am going to live in this game there need to be more levels to it than the game mechanics can provide. Now my question is, is there any other civilians out there? Please tell us a bit about yourselves and what you do, staying out of trouble.

Jyudas is more a mercenary by necessity.
I always saw him as more of a hunter, fighting against the Kitin (remember them?), hunting to fulfil quotas, protecting caravans from hostile animals, that sort of thing.
He's also an (adequete) musician and, if it were ever implemented, the musical addition would make 'bard' (In the proper sense) a possible change of career.

Re: Civilians, who are you?
let's see now Sunew the Civilian...
well usually I fight against the Kitins, and the only reason I fight in AD is for the fun of it, not because I particularly believe in either faction. So, excluding that...
I would probably work on my sword crafting and invent new weapons and tools. I would be one of the people who build ships to get to other worlds and water/air/land vehicles for getting around on Atys.
I would still be involved in pvp, but only in arenas, fighting for fame and fortune, not for faction.

Sounds good Jy. Jool's not much for fighting...he might think he is, but he can barely get his sword off his hip without injuring himself. He's had a tough time as a child on atys, so from moving back from exile he's having the time of his life (i.e. one that doesn't involve being a beaten slave). He's spent a lot of time on his own so often comes up with crazy ideas and says things that might be best left unsaid.grimjim wrote:He's also an (adequete) musician and, if it were ever implemented, the musical addition would make 'bard' (In the proper sense) a possible change of career.
Jool not interested in any war...The only things Jool fights against are the ones that try and hurt his friends...and of course when he puts his bag on the wrong way and has to fight his way out from all the straps.

Gelaerth is a "BTDT" - Been There, Done That. He saw the war, it's lack of sense and madness. He decided never to go back there, unless his friends need help. And this is the only reason he could ever go to war again - to help friends, not to kill others. So now Gelaerth just roams around the planet, trying to talk to others and to understand them. You could say that he's trying to become Atys' psychologist or even sociologist :o ) Sometimes he draws his rifle and goes hunting - this was his father's most favourite hobby.
Hazzar is still very young and naive. Ever since his childhood, he was very untrusting towards the "higher powers". Now, as the war took his sister, he stands firmly against those powers. He believes that this war is religious one, Homins are losing it, whichever faction they fight for. That's why he founded a movement called Homins Against Religious Madness. This movement is against this particular war and Kami/Karavan influence on Hominkind in general. But Hazzar is not only a home-grown philosopher :o ) It is his dream to become a sword master - one who builds them and wields them like only few can.

Re: Civilians, who are you?
Gillest is a explorator and used to be a pathfinder.
The planet is not welcoming to the homins and lot of the early hours of an explorers are dedicated to training fight and training into the art of magic: an explorator has to be able to defend himself and his party.
Along his adventures, been sometimes lonesome with no merchants at hand, necessity arised to learn some mats seeking and some crafting to make some equipment between 2 fights.
Fight the differents monsters populating Atys to learn their behaviour and their weakness, to be able to react faster when opening the way to some travellers and merchants caravans; rezing the needy warriors along the path, such used to be his way of life.
Curiosity is part of an explorator behaviour, so when War occurs, he will pop in (especially if new lands have been discovered) explore and fight (Fight and kill maybe, to learn and survive, not for the sake of killing).
But an explorer doesnt stay very long at the same place.

Re: Civilians, who are you?
Seanchai sees herself as a protector of the herbivores that populate Atys, and she tends to the herds as best as she can. Which often means that if she sees a herbivore being attacked by a big mean non-herbivore she will either taunt said non-herbivore (taunt, invul and run run run) or throw a bunch of firespells on it (if the Almighty Taunting doesnt work). The latter doesnt work all the time either, considering that Seanchai ain't much of a spellcaster, so it often so happens that the herbivore dies and the non-herbivore spots the tasty treat that is my character (once they go Seanchai, they never go back). And she's too busy mourning the dead herbivore to press invul (read: no time to press invul and hp so low that a weeny ragus could take her out) and then there's one dead Seanchai. More often than not her dp is maxed.
So, in short, she's never killed a herbivore ('cept for that fateful day she accidentally killed a bodoc. She had just saved it from a gingo, and at that time she was a very poor homin so she went to loot said gingo and...misclicked and punched the bodoc dead).
She was born into a family of storytellers, but has strayed from her designated path due to the simple fact that most herbivores can't understand a word of what she's saying.
P.S By herbivore I mean those animals that does not attack when my char gets too close.

Re: Civilians, who are you?
Sanz is an explorer but recently he's been spending a lot of time out in the wilderness, away from the politics of homins that seem to be driving everyone towards war. He hadn't intended to; he used to be quite sociable. But many of his friends were lost after the Invasion and others have disappeared, never to be seen again.
You'll find him hovering at the back at large gatherings, listening to everything that goes on, taking note and talking to himself. He's begun doing that a lot, especially since he spent a few months by himself in the Prime Roots. With the glowing trees and lakes and oozes. He's not quite himself.

Thanks, reading about these characters gave me hope for life on Atys. A good company to be in too!

Re: Civilians, who are you?
Sehraci is a bit of a socialite from the upper tiers of Matisian society. She enjoys everything of high quality and with a bit of excess- particularly food, drink, friends, and fashion.
Her innate talent has always been in psionics. Particularly defensive affliction, she excels in mental trickery and mind control in any combat situation. This is appropriate for her as she is easily disgusted by the crudeness of most combat realities like blood, sliced appendages, and burnt and battered creatures, even if they are kitin. Sehraci uses her mental powers to distance herself from those things and let others do the dirty work whenever possible.
To counter balance her high life in Yrkanis, forest foraging always manages to calm her and get her head out of the clouds and back to Atys - whether it be flowering trees, picturesque vistas, or snow covered knolls. The beauties of the Prime Roots intrigue her as well so of late much of her foraging time has been spent there.
Fancying herself something of a fashion designer, her crafting skills focus on medium armor and being able to use it with all other types of armor to mix and match the perfect outfit. While her apartment is stocked to the brim with clothes, she always seems to need a new set for the next big occasion.
Although she has a disdain for the harsher aspects of combat, the art of one-handed sword dueling is a favorite hobby. Her skills in which are formidable, and she won't hesitate to use them to strike down kitin or anything else that threatens her friends. However, Sehr much prefers to keep her sword work to friendly duels with other homins where the means are skill and finesse over brute strength, and she can be very competitive in this arena.
A faithful follower of Jena, she put aside her abhorrence of digging dirty terrain like desert and has been hard at work collecting materials for the Karavan colleges of faith. While holding no ill-will towards the Kami or their followers directly, she does fear Ma-Duk has been corrupted, but has faith Jena can remedy the situation on her own.
With the connections she's made and having the inside look at a lot of Yrkanis politics, Sehraci loves to play the role of the diplomat and get involved in public relations. Her experience in such has landed her the position of representative of her guild at all official events, and it is a duty she takes seriously.
