A question for the more seasoned players

I've kept an eye on this game since I tried it in the open beta about a year ago, and I was pretty impressed overall then. I just picked it up at the store the other day and thought I'd see how it was coming along. I must say that overall I love the feel and layout of the game, but I do have some questions and concerns.

1) I love the way the skill set works, but I was looking at the overall progression of spells into the higher levels and it looks like they're all the same spells over and over, just more powerful versions of them. I also understand (at least the basics) of how stanza work, but what I'm wondering is this: are there any big changes in player skills (ie new spells, stanza combos that lead to new spells, improved spell gfx, etc) or is it truly just the same stuff, just stronger versions of it? Same question applies to melee skills too.

2) I'm a quest-a-holic. When I play anygame like this I quest til the sun goes down. There are missions here, and I've done these types of things in other games, however I like compelling quests, something that has story and substance to it. Does that yet exist in SoR? I've not found anything yet, but I'm still on the beginners island so far.

3) I play MMO's on time contraints. I love playing them, but I'm a student with 3 kids and a wife that works and goes to school, so I basically play when I get the chance. This means I need to solo most of the time. So far I've noticed (in the early stages) Mages (as it were) are tough to solo with, and fighers do pretty well. Is the later portion of this game solo friendly or is it like many others where you should plan to be grouping if you want to play it and be able to truly progress?

I'm very impressed with the game overall, and they've made leaps and bounds since it's release. I think it's one of, if not THE best looking game on the market, but that's my opinion. I would just like to see a little more substance in it, or like to know if I'm missing it or just haven't made it to that point yet.

Thanks so much!!

There are more advanced spells at level 125 elemental magic, but besides that the progression is simply a gain in strength rather than something new. The lower level magics have a graphics improvement if the spell power is 100 or higher.

The more compelling quests are supposed to be covered by the encyclopedia feature, which is a feature that is still in its beta phases, but partially in game.

It is very easy to solo in this game, especially because of the power and aura stanza abilities, however it is slower than fighting in groups, and for this reason some people say that you can't solo, even though you can all the way from level 1 to 250.

I am so happy to hear you picked up the game in a store! what store was it?

We make a lot of our own quests too, especially for the new to the mainland, there is getting the city to city spawns, then the to the teleports.. then on to the other civilizations. Theres really a lot to do. Oh yes... learning the prime roots takes some time too. Fame missions, though tedious are more important now. Some fun in those if you grab a gang and dash off to do them together. Many of us have only scattered bits of time in game and do understand if you say you can only stay 30 minutes or an hour whether for mission runs or a session of hunting.

I advise you to try to maintain the 'this is a beta' mentality as long as you can. Remember the concept is so refreshing that it will have infancy, toddler stage, childhood, adolescence (note the lack of attempt to say where it is now). I hope you can find joy in watching the Saga grow.

1) The graphics of spells do improve, and after level 100 you can mix and match with the double missile stanza to make varied graphic options. You can also use concentrate at earlier levels to get a graphical improvement (if that's all your interested in ;)
After 125 you can get each of the races spells.

2) Quests in this game arn't story driven. However, you can find mission's that are linked to the Encylopedia. When you have done all of the required missions you can do a rite (and earn craft-plans, more hp/sap etc for doing it)

3) This game is NOT solo friendly. Don't get me wrong, you can solo doing some things (Harvesting, Crafting). However, fighting usually requires a team of people. However, you will usually find people playing at all times of the day and so should be able to find the teams you need to progress.

The other option there is you can join a guild, since then it will be easier to find teams :)

Welcome! or welcome back.

In addition to the double spells at lvl 100 and racial spells at lvl 125, there are new spells options like vampirism, bomb effects, sprays, damage over time, and the afflictionists (available after lvl 50) have a whole host of different spells to choose from. If you are interested in looking at whole skill tree, look at the Ballistic Mystix website.

I would say that missions (quests) don't have an overabundance of story and substance but they can provide one with interesting puzzles and challenges. I have found it highly entertaining to try to gain fame with each and every one of Atys many tribes. :)
3) Is the later portion of this game solo friendly or is it like many others where you should plan to be grouping if you want to play it and be able to truly progress?
If you are good at sneaking around, you can travel nearly everywhere at medium levels, you can accomplish quests, explore and of course, forage and craft easily solo. I would say that it is difficult and slow to progress one's foremost combat skill solo at higher levels (~>100). It's so much easier with a healer around! However, if you are good fighter, you can easily solo a lower level of maging (except healing of course) and visa-versa.

I appreciate all of your input. Sounds like there are some pretty passionate players out there. One more question too I meant to ask earlier...

How about creatures? FFXI was terrible for recycling creatures and you ended up fighting the same things over and over again, just more powerful versions of them. How is the creature population in this game? I understand the large confilct is with the insects, but am I going to be fighting Yobus forever (exaggeration, but I think you get the idea of what I'm saying).

Thanks again for everyones input.

Creatures creature everywhere oh my :D

Kittin - eek yack you crustacian/insectazoid types.
Carnivores - run they all wanna eat you on sight.
Herbivores - notorious for dragging carnivores/kittins to you at the worst time.
Plants - you know you hate salad get some revenge.
NPCs - Just be sure you want to kill that faction and know the impact on your fame.
Steroid mobs- Void Plods, Lagoons Bolobi, etc..
Named Mobs - Unique named versions of certian mob types
Boss Mobs - fun fun stuff here super mob!

know back to your question. There are reasons to kill mobs solo and there are reasons to kill mobs in teams. To be honest some mobs will be better for XP in teams and some mobs will be better for solo depending on your situation. For me I hate plants cause I killed so many of them solo/duo because I have maxed resists due to 250 elemental. But I attack them in my crazy quests to get 200 + all mele branches.

You can attack and recycle same mobs forever but there is room to deviate and from that and add some variety. Lots of fun if you dont demand 3k xp a kill even if i takes 10 times longer than gettting 1k a kill

Prolly off-topic, but you can solo def.affl and off.affl without the +missile plan ;)

Hand to hand and Daggers might be soloable too, but only against plants and would take aaaaages (having something with higher levels helps ofc here aswell).

Still need to find out how to level heal solo :p

[edit] darn, Neun beat me to it :)
