Hello and question...

Hello, I signed up for the free trial and am downloading now. Will probably play tonight after work. Have come from, well, quite a few past mmorpg's. Now that I got broadband (yay!) I thought I would download Ryzom and give it a try, seems like a good, close community from what I've seen on the forums ("philosophical" arguments aside) which is what I am looking for.
The amount of time I will have to play will vary greatly from week to week based on my work schedule. Some weeks very much, others very little. I was looking at making a character from either the 'jungle' or 'desert' tribal races. Sorry I forgot the names, and was wanting to go 'combat heavy'.. but then I realized maybe this game is set-up different than that (forgive my noobness), but anyways my question is what would be a good race/skill path for a relatively easy to play (for, at the moment anyways, a casual gamer) that would have good durability and allow me to explore/experience the game during my trial period.
Hello again, and thank you very much for your time, I will spend time reading the online guides and such after work today, but a little advice from experienced players is usually the most valuable. I look forward to seeing you in-game.
Thank you!

Hi there
Welcome to Atys and I hope to see you around soon
While the choice of race is mainly just what you look like and where you start out (the starter islands can sometimes be deserted depending, that can make a bit of a difference...) Some people suggest just making up a whole bunch of "test" characters and taking them to mainland straight away to get a feel for things

Hiya and Welcome to Atys.
The "trouble" here is that SoR does not have the kind of "Classes & Race specifics" System most Players are used to from other MMORPGs, or RPGS for that matter.
As was said quite often on other occassions, it all depends on WHAT you want do do with your Character. There will not be a "handle" as to wich identify your Charakter as a say "Paladin", or "Hunter" (titles appart).
You´ll have to act the part to be a "Hunter", or a as you put it "combat heavy" Charakter.
Only trouble with "just" skilling Combat realted things is, if your team ever gets into serious trouble and you´re the last Man standing, you won´t be able to rezz them, if you ain´t got NO magics at all... So a bit of HEAL Spells could save you a few bad looks from your teammates.
Appart from that there is absolutely no Problem with being a "Main Tank" in the truest sense of the Word. Just go down fighting!

Hi again, im back, had trouble downloading (speed was very slow) but was able to obtain a boxed copy today. Made a quick throwaway character and looked around a bit. Wow! this game looks pretty good, after a break I think I will make a Fyros and get to work... I have to say the game world seems great, nice 'ambiance' although the amount of windows was a bit... emmm.. intimidating.. im sure theyll be second nature soon enough. Cya ingame..

Aw, most of those "windows" aren´t realy needed.
The default adjustment is just that. All windows can be dragged around the screen, if unlocked by right clicking them, made smaller or bigger, and even more transparent just if you need them. The quite big Main Window can shrink down to a nicer size with just a right click and "Icon Mode" activation.
Some "vanish" into others, the chats and System Message Window for example, can form one block with "holders" on top, to just click on them. Use the "User" channel so you´ll be able to see all Chats. Adjust the chat colors a bit, and you´ll be able to read them and tell theam apart just fine.
To learn HOW o do all that:
Use the HELP window (just this once) and do the tutorial.
It helps a lot.
And under the k key there´s a shortcut and keylist to find.
I realy think nobody uses the default settings anymore
