Radeon Mobility 9200: "The client failed to allocate AGP memory"

Arg. I'm attempting to play this game on my HP Pavillion ze5300 notebook. It meets all the minimum requirements; my video card is a Radeon Mobility 9200 with 128 MB RAM allocated to it. When I start up SoR, I get the following error:

"The client failed to allocate AGP memory

The Ryzom client can't allocate AGP memory. Check in your computer BIOS that AGP memory has been reserved. If not, reserve between 16 and 32 Mo of AGP memory. It it is already done, try to update your chipset drivers."

Can someone help me out here? I have no idea what AGP memory is. My BIOS setup seems to have no idea, either--there's no way to change or reserve it, as this warning suggests to do, when I go to BIOS setup. As far as updating the chipset drivers... well, I'm having a hard time finding updates. I did tweak my chipset out with MobileMod last year, to fix some irritating graphical glitches in SWG.

I've scoured this forum already for possible solutions. I've gone into Ryzom Config and forced the game to start in OpenGL. That didn't work, so I went back and forced it to start in Direct 3D. I've changed my compter's advanced settings in properties to all sorts of different configurations, searching for a possible solution. I've set all the in-game graphics configurations to low.

When I'm in-game, the mouse cursor jumps all over the screen rather than tracking normally. I fixed that by checking the "hardware" box in the "mouse" config in-game, but it's still kinda funky. The worst part is that my character moves like he's wading through sludge. And then the game freezes.

Any suggestions, fixes, patches, get well cards, or shoulders to cry on would be greatly appreciated. I'll be waiting anxiously to hear, and m o v i n g v e r y s l o w l y if at all.

I had the same problem, it was fixed when I went to the main ryzom directory and used ryzom_recover (just double clcik on it and a window will pop up and start downloading stuff, and dont forget to reboot before you start playing).

What same problem did you have? The error message or the walking through sludge followed by freezing? At any rate, I ran ryzom_recover, but the error message remains. Ryzom_recover simply downloads the patches again.

I did disable pixel and vertex shading, and that seems to have improved things a little bit. It's still kind of slow and choppy, and it'll eventually freeze, but I can actually play the game for a short while now.

Anyone else have any suggestions?

Hello,
Could you run the Configuration tool, and in the Display settings area, make sure you're set to OpenGL rather than Direct3D or Auto? That might resolve the freeezing problem.

Yeah, running it in OpenGL does seem to eliminate the freezing--thanks; although the choppiness remains, as well as the mystery of: what exactly is AGP memory and how do I allocate it?

I received this message after I downloaded the latest drivers from ATI for the Radeon series. I went into device manager and deleted the drivers and let windows install drivers for the card on boot up and was fine.

That's interesting--so you -deleted- and went back to the previous driver set? Hm. I will try to rollback my driver w/out deleting and see what happens. Out of curiousity, were any performance issues resolved by doing that?

The only issue I was having was the agp memory error. The game is playing fine now. I also am playing DAoC without any graphic issues.

yy48n19 since yer using an laptop it might be the drivers. i'w experienced some error to with my laptop on other games...the only thing i can tell you is to either update yer drivers from the manufactuers page or to do as crete100 said. the problem with laptops is that the drivers is't as developed as the graphic drivers for non-mobility. if that is the caste it isn't the game itself that is the problem. ever experienced this before?

yes, laptops have a freaky nature like that.. to where even if you install the latest drivers for the chipset i.e. the 9000 series. The mobility drivers tend to be a little different from the desktop version. that might be the problem...

but it sounds more like the fact HP laptops tend to be designed to use system DDR ram for video ram. in this case it is what is being refered to as the "AGP memory". It's one of the worst designs in my opinion. but it helps to keep the product a little cheaper. and it runs well with most things. but suprising as it may seem. And you might want a tech to look at it for you. you are probably over looking it in your bios somewhere. it sounds like there isn't much memory allocated for the graphics card. Also double check to see how much total system RAM you have. if you have anything less than 512 MB of ram then you probably need to add more system ram. I'm suspecting that you may only have 256 or worse, if the system only has 128 and it can't have all 128 assigned to video. IF you do have at least 512mb of total system ram. then.. a tech should look at it and be able to tell you what you need to do.

I've had problems with other online games with a dell laptop i have that has the nvidia 5200 with 64 mb or ram. it all seemed to be caused by the updated desktop drivers i was using with the moble video in the laptop. even though the game wouldn't run unless i updated to a certain version. The game ran fine but it would crash after about 2 to 3 hours of gameplay. but i didn't experience any slowdown. that was for the WoW stress test.
