Magic help please

I have been leveling as a split fighter/mage so far, currently 18 fighter/15mage. Lately it has been difficult to raise magic up. I have a 2 handed sword that kills fast with good damage, while my magic nuke hasn't been scrathing the creatures really. I have the second level in acid and rot nuke, I would have expected magic to be more help, but right now it seems as if it is completely worthless. Does the damage on magic improve, or am I doing something wrong right now? Also, if it does improve what skills do I need to take for some noticable damage please?

Thanks to those who respond.

Mugu, when you cast are you still using your melee weapon? Also, what mobs are you using acid on? If you are using it on Kipee, that's the largest reason. They are resistant to Acid damage.

If you want to notice a big difference in magic damage, you will want to try getting a higher QL magical amplifier. They boost your damage and other things and make it a little easier :)

Similar like with melee you need a good weapon, in this case a magic amplifier, to make a good amount of damage with spells. Try getting your hands on a "q20 yubo staff", magic should improve a lot there.

Note. too, that magic will be a lot less powerful if you cast it while wearing heavy or med armor.

From what I have seen so far ... Per hit magic will be weaker unless you have a really bad sword and a really good Amp. However With magic you dont need to stand there getting beat up so it balances out.

I have heavy armor and a 2 handed sworfd, no magic amplifier. I figured that would be needed as a mage to deal heavy damage, but I expected to still be able to make a warlock sort of character I guess and be able to fight and cast spells. Looks as if these 2 skills wont work together at all then, correct? Or, at least not worthwhile since the damage seems pathetic.

I used the rot spell on kipee since acid did no damage, it only ends up doing 6 or so damage though.

For raising magic, fear is absolutely essential. With it, you can solo very effectively.

I'm assuming you started out with a mix of fighter and mage packs, so you'll have to buy the spell yourself. It's a rather painful 50 points to buy right out, but SO worth it. With it, simply load up your best nuke (preferably with a decent magic amplifier equipped), pull with an acid nuke, cast fear, two nukes, fear, repeat until your target is dead. Yubos are ideal for this as they don't have social aggro.

Now raising defensive magic is another story, a bit of a pain once you're into the 20s. :D Fear counts as defensive magic til 50, so that helps a bit, for the most part you'll have to group though.

Correct. A fighter casting with the sword and heavy armor is about as effective as a mage bashing a mob to death with his staff while in light armor. Trying to bash to death, that is...

The minimal damage from your spell has another (main) reason. You are using the wrong spell. Rot is basically only effective against plants (depending your starting place you may or may not have some in the lvl1-50 area, so don't wonder if you haven#t see any). Insects or mammals suffer only like 25% of the max damage.
You Acid is of no use, too. Kipees are to 100% immune against it (the only animal mob in the lvl 1-50 zone which is immune against acid btw). Against Kipees you need cold.

Random thought: Are plant mobs even "mobs"? If I am not mistaken mob is an acronym for "moving object" - are plants then umbos? (unmoving objects)?

So then is it basically the same as most other games I am guessing for class systems, you can do crafting and be a mage or fighter? I didn't take any crafting in the hopes I could do the mage fighter path, guess I should just take one or the other though and get some crafting for something different to do at times.

If you have the time and the patience, you can do them all on one character.
If you want to be a "battlemage" your best bet is to switch from heavy armor and wear medium or light. Don't use a two handed sword, use a one handed sword and a shield. Just a few suggestions.

Not exactly. You can be both - just not at the same time. You can bash mobs with your sword in heavy armor and later that day switch to light armor & staff to nuke some alone or act as healer for your party.

This is not (also ;) ) exactly true. It only seems that way because it's pretty easy to get a weapon with max damage by using the right choice mats, but this is not possible with magic staffs. Max I have seen (and make myself) is +97% damage - and this requires supreme mats.

A q70 2-hand melee weapon does max. 192 damage. A lvl 70 spell does max 189 damage. Meaning with increase damage thats 384 damage vs 372 damage with a 97% staff - thats no big difference, especially considering that a melee weapon will miss a lot more often than a spells is getting resisted.
