Not sure how to fix this

I just downloaded the free trial and all the patches .woohoo! and get loged in
to what i think mught be a character select screen but all i can see is a big
questionmark spinning around my screen . any ideas what i can do to see the whole picture? thank you.

Well the question mark is part of the char selection screen... so I'm guessing your screen resolution is too low to allow the whole window to appear
.

Make sure your screen resolution is at least 1024*768 (so that you can see the buttons "Create New Character" and "Play" which appear at the bottom of the screen when you either have no character or a character you want to play, respectivly.

To set your SoR graphics go into the Ryzom folder and double click or run the file "configure.bat"

It sounds like the desktop is way less than 1024x768x32 and that the video drivers are running things as a virtual desktop.
Your monitor may also not be behaving properly at the refresh rate assigned. Run the 'Configure Ryzom' from the launcher and ensure that the resolution and refresh rate for fullscreen are ones that work with your system. Or choose Windowed Mode and select a size (1024x768 or greater.)

I am having this problem aswell. I have tried tampering with the control options in the configure options wizard , but i am having no luck what-so-ever I still get this tall question mark in the middle of the screen and i am still not able to select a character option to create. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks in advance.

in windows, control panel->display->settings tab->screen resolution needs to be 1024x768 or bigger
first window (login and char selection) has always been in windowed mode and it needs 1024x768 so buttons (create/play/delete) at bottom of screen will be visible.
