I figured I'd get here and say hi, like the email said.

HI! So there. :D

Now then, I feel like being some kind of ranged fighter, is that a doable option, and if so, have you got any recomendations?

Hello :)

Ranged is possible as most things are possible ingame, somehow.. :p

To be serious: You can do whatever you like, as long as you put in what it takes.

Ranged does a little less damage then other skills and includes harvesting and crafting.

Welcome to Atys.

Ranged fight is doable, yes, but certainly not easy. The problems you would face:
- Firstly, you'll need ammo. Buying this will get you bankrupt in no time, so you have to craft it yourself. For that you need materials. Buying these will get you bankrupt even faster, so you have to forage them yourself. So you're now levelling two extra trees (ammo crafting and forage) in order to be able to level your ranged fight.
-Also, you can only carry so much ammo at once, so after hunting a while you'll have to restock.
- You will do far less damage than an elemental mage, and at a shorter range. Plus the elemental mage doesn't need ammo. So you're not really good for doing damage.
- You will do less damage than a melee fighter, and will be a lot more vulnerable. And the melee fighter doesn't need ammo either. So you're not really good for tanking either.

Because of all the above, ranged fighters are hardly usefull in groups, so you may have trouble finding a hunting group that will let you join. The only real advantage a ranged fighter has is the ability to attack while running (no other skills allow you to do this), but that's not usefull in a group.
It's possible to solo ranged fight, picking out slow creatures (like yubo's and bodocs) and shooting at them while running from them, never giving them a chance to hit you. But compared to group hunting, this will be slow. Doable, but not easy ;)

EDIT: Sorry, recomendations, here they are:
- Only go ahead with ranged if you enjoy doing it and care most about having fun. If you want to be powerfull, or usefull in groups, do something else.
- Craft boots until you have enough crafting skill points to spent, then learn ranged weapon crafting and some ammo plans as quickly as possible, so you can make your own ammo. Later you'll probably want the plan to craft your own gun as well.
- Learn to forage so you can get the materials for ammo crafting. Ammo requires resin, oil and bark. At the low level it is very hard to find these materials yourself, so once you get to the mainland, ask some nice highlevel forager to show you where they are. It only takes them a few minutes and could save you hours of looking.

So I created a fighting, foraging and crafting character.

After some general fumbling around I managed to level some and get ahold of a ranged weapon. After some more leveling I fell like I can take on almost anything on that newbie island one-on-one, except that big, brown, manylegged thing. The one that looks like a cross between something from Aliens and Starship Troopers.

I did manage to craft my own ammo! Crafting seems like fun, but foraging not so much so. With foraging I feel like I'm fumbling in the dark. There are som many different kinds of prospecting and extracting, and you spend so much time looking. Sometimes you would have all the time in the world to dig around, while at other times the it would explode in your face almost immediately.

Ranged fighting does seem underpower though. Sometimes I feel like I would get more done walking around poking things with a stick.

Don't worry, you'll learn how the different foraging actions work in no time. And yes, like I said, at low levels you spent a long time looking for the materials. That gets a lot easier at the higher levels when you get better range, angle, tracking etc.

Yep, most would agree ranged is underpowered.

Ranged damage is greatly effected by the quality of the ammo... for sheer volume needed of good mats your gonna need to dig or have a supplier.

Good luck...

The suckyness of ranged comabt made me rethink, and I decided to go with a mele combat character instead. And to make things easy I switched my crafting in on a armor making path. I figured I would make somekind of "can take anything you can dish out" kind of tankish character.

So now my question is: Is this kind of character more of use in groups and are there any pitfalls I should look out for?

Oh, and is there any way to mark out where you found mats, I can't seem to ever find my way back to them?
