I started my character as a Fyros Tank type, and got him 17 levels in fight. I decided that my last 50 points would go to starter Mage so I would have some basic pulling and healing spells in the future.
I noticed that if I pull with a small nuke, then finish the MOB with my sword, I don't get any Magic exp, and reduced Fight exp. Is this as intended? Are hybrid Fighter / Mages going to lose out on exp by chosing to use both schools in combat?

This is not my experience.
Every time i pull with a spell, I end up having my experience split, mostly for melee, a little for magic.
Same with heal/nuke magic splits.

Yes, this is how it's intended to work. Unless you're using an offensive spell you should get experience for magic.

I experienced something like this -- it's cause you're using both a level 17 and a level 1 skill in the same fight. You should get very very little magic exp if pulling with a low level nuke and getting in a lot of hits melee.
Try fights using only magic, fighting the weakest level 1 mobs, and you should get magic exp fine.
EDIT: Even when your fight and magic are the same level, your EXP will get divided by how many actions you do in the fight. If you nuke once, and it takes 19 hits from your weapon to finish the mob, you'll get 100 EXP magic and 1900 EXP fight. Generally speaking, the best way to gain experience is to only use one type of action in any given fight.

Should note -
1 - The formula is based on hits landed. If you cast a spell and it does not hit the target or is resisted, then it will not count in the formula.
2 - Damage has nothing to do with how exp is divided
3 - The total EXP given before the split is the total amount of EXP you would have earned if you used the highest level skill only. So if you would normally get 1000 EXP using just melee with fight 20 and you also used some magic 10 in the fight, the total EXP earned from the fight would be 1000.
I observed this on the Noobie island. It works out very well if you keep the two skills close in level.

Best way to get magic up is to just stand their and kill suckling Yubos. If you armor is decent enough for a fighter, then take the SAP hit and just blast away. I could kill a Suckling Yubo in one spell. It only got 100xp but I never ran out of SAP, the loot wasn't worth bothering with, etc. So I got more experience per minute on the low experience mobs than I did fighting high experience mobs.

I tested exactly that recently:
With fight 34 and magic 15 I get about 170 XP for a sucky yubo killed by spells but only 14+14 XP if i hit it with a spell and finish it in combat then.
And imho thats exactly how the XP system should work.
