Starting as a crafter

Greetings all,

I'm very excited about the prospect of playing Ryzom. I downloaded it yesterday but have not had a chance to try it yet, wanting to read up a little more on the game before leaping in.

I'm very intrigued by the game system and the skill progressions, but I'm wondering if, coming in as a newcomer to an established game, if it might be difficult to start out as a crafter. I'm thinking of a WOW type economy where the auction house is crowded with cheap items picked up as drops or crafted by high level crafters.

Obviously (even to me after only a quick overview) this is NOT WoW and has a much different economy. So how does a newbie crafter get started and how exactly does he make his wares available to the public?

Hope to see you in the "flesh" soon...

A crafter will need forage and a hunting skill (magic or fight) to be able to gather materials to craft with. It costs experience points to get magic, harvest or craft, but it costs nothing to get melee.

To sell stuff you go to any merchant and open the sell window. You can sell directly to the NPC for a base price or sell to other players at a markup of your choice; when you sell to players you get a small advance from the merchant. Your goods either sell at your markup to a player or after six days you get a smaller amount of money. Since the starting area has so few players I would just sell to the NPC, except for magic amplifiers and two-handed weapons which do sell.

I love this game, its so deep, but that does make it frustrating and difficult to start with.

Greetings and welcome!

I think you've come to the right place.

Crafting is very rewarding here ;)

Although, it's pretty much a necessity that a crafter be a forager as well, the materials needed to level really can't be come across any other way.

That being said, player crafted goods are almost exclusively what is used by the community.

There used to be some itmes that were dominated by the high level crafters (light armor, jewlery) but those recently had level restrictions placed on them in a patch. Now there will be a place for even the low level crafters of those goods.

Items are sold by placing them with NPC merchants. Then when any player looks at the merchants in that land, they will see your items for sale. If no one buys it in a week, it's lost, but you do get part of the asking price.

The merchants aren't the sole way people obtain goods though, often they are supplied by guild members internally. But when/if you become a member of a guild you'll probably find they'll put your crafting to work there as well.

Let us know if you have more questions, and I look forward to meeting you on Atys! :)

Welcome :)

While it is possible to be a crafter without beeing a harvester you should start to dig for mats. The more mats you have the faster you progress in crafting.

There is no item drop in Ryzom. Animals do drop mats only. Those are also usable for crafting.

Ok, in your early levels nobody is interessted in your crafted items, but you maybe. So you just sell them to a NPC merchant. Later there might be peoples who are interessted in your items. You can offer them through the NPC merchant or use the basar forum. If you are in high levels and know as a crafter it might happen that peoples send you tells with orders.

Latest changes ingame give lower crafters a chance to be useful.

There are many crafters in guilds. So most of the guilds do not need outside crafters. One goal as crafter could be to be self sufficient.

Crafters on the top have a spezial ability ;) They have access to high quality materials and therefore can offer top equipment at sometimes top prices.

I d say, start crafting and see yourself where it is going to. Then decide your way.

just as a side note as my fellow homins have covered most other points, you *dont* need to get a single level in a fighting skill to be an effective crafter. It's rare but there are people around who purely dig/craft and dont level other branches.

Some advice whether you choose to fight as well or not is to do a lot of digging; it's the most effective way to gather materials to craft with and the more you advance in foraging the greater quantity of mats you pull out of the ground. And never, ever train anything but craft specific skills from your craft tree, always use others (melee/magic/forage) to get the stat upgrades and aura's :)
