...But is there, or will there be, an easier way to swap between characters on the same acount without having to completely log out and then back in?

Yes I'm sure. If you look at the stickied Wishlist thread you'll see quite a few people wanting that feature so I'm positive it will be added in eventually.
Although it is nice to be able to haul ass out of the program...like when you're boss is coming down the hallway
