Hi all,
I doubt most of you will know me, as you can tell by my post counter I'm not exactly a regular poster to the forums but I am a regular reader. I have played Ryzom throughout it's Open Beta and for the past six/seven months...
My name is Shadowmonkey and I love this game or, more accurately, I love the potential this game has. The graphics are beautiful, the community is the best I've been in or around on the Internet and there is so much more that could be done to this place that would make it the envy of every other MMORG player...
But I've become increasingly bored with the whole place, it's simply team up, fight something, fight something else, get bored, go and do a bit of harvesting/crafting... None of this fills me with any kind of pleasure or satisfaction anymore and I've only been on randomly in the last month for precisly that reason, there's nothing keeping me interested in the game enough to come on-line anymore...
The Outposts are being hailed as the saviour of the game, something that will re-ignite the RP aspect of the place and give guilds something to work on and battle against. I disagree, the most powerful guilds will obtain the best outposts, the other, lesser, guilds will fight amongst themselves for the smaller ones while their members (increasingly bored being in a guild with no Outpost) will flock to join one of the bigger ones until there are but a few huge guilds left that own everything... I'm not saying this will definately happen but I think that the likely-hood is depressingly high..
Ryzom-Ring, I'm sorry but what? Why waste time on something like this when there are parts of the game (that were supposed to be working at time of release) that are obviously dodgy or completely missing? I admit, it could be great, it will be the only one of it's kind and I can see the attraction. What I would be more attracted to, however, are problems and missing components fixed and added to the main game.
Make the main game attractive (and complete)and you don't have to tease players with glorified add-ons such as the Ring.
I turned to the dark-side a month ago and tried out World Of Warcraft. The UI is horrible, the chat system sucks arse and the community is so bad that I wanted to drop a nuclear bomb on the whole thing and declare it unfit for human consumption.
Then, strangely, the quest system, the ability of following a story that means something and goes somewhere, took hold of me. I met a few nice ppl and joined their guild. I tried out different professions and different classes and I found it so much more interesting than just choosing a race that has no effect on the abilities of the characters (until 125 ele that is) and seeing where it could take me..
Then came the crunch, I could no longer afford to keep up a sub on both games and so I had to choose which one I carried on with. The pros and cons with both games were long lists but there was only one conclusion for me...
World of Warcraft (at the moment) is a better game...
Regardless of the amount of idiots you find on it, the sense of achievment, progress and satisfaction as you complete quests and gain lvls is without parallel within Ryzom. Gaining specific abilities for different classes instead of just the basic ele or melee lvls is so much more interesting and it encourages you to have more than one character so you can see how everything works, what other classes get that you don't etc....
There just so much more...content to it
I hate this, I really do. Ryzom will forever be my favourite MMORG for it's potential if nothing else but unless they sort out the rites, offer additional skills and deliver other, promised, content I'm leaving this virtual world for the forseeable future...
So why write this? Why go through all of this when I'm not going to be about much anymore?
I would be very interested to know what other people think; of my decision, of what I've said and how others think about this game regarding the topics I've brought up this rather lengthy post...
I'll keep reading these forums, I'll still read the news items. If and when there's more interesting things to do than the big three (fight, craft/harv) I'll be back...
But for now, I have to say goodby and God bless to you all...
Take care
