This is strange to me

Ok when i first arrived on the mainland, I would fight the 2x* Force birds flying about outside of town. I was still wearing all my newbie gear, and they hit me four around 46-48 dmg. So when I have the $$ to buy some armor, I go and buy some Light armor, a whole new set. And when I went back out to fight, they still hit me for the same amount of dmg. Now the new pieces of armor I bought all have Max vs, so I thought that would help me out a bit, apprently not.
I'm just really confused about this whole situation. Guess I have alot to learn about the armor/weapon system in this game still.

Light Armor is best for casting spells, foraging and crafting - and the occasional fashion show. If you want protection from damage, try out medium and heavy armor. Be aware though, that what level you can wear depends on your constitution and that there is some constriction of movement with the medium and more with the heavy. There are actual numbers involved and I'm sure someone will come along and tell you about them.

Light armor doesnt do much for protection. It helps with casting/creafing/digging. It reduces the penalty of your actions. Heavy armor is what you want for protection. But heavy armor is only good if you are using meee (fighting with a sword and such).
I'm not an armor expert, but a quick guide is:
Melee fighting : Heavy armor
Magic : Light Armor
Forrage/Craft : Light Armor
Medium Armor is in the middle of Heavy and Light. It does not protect as much as Heavy, but has a lower penalty for your actions.

Ok that's what I figured. I'm going for a Mage character, but I'm LvL'ing Fighting up as I go, so I guess I'll just wear light armor so I don't have as many setbacks for the Mage.
I was thinking about Medium Armor, but then I have an action delay cause of the penalty.
To all the Mages in the game..what type of armor do you find best to wear? The answer is probably gonna be light, but i'm still just curious. Thanks for helping out

Yup, light.
I don't like the 'penalty" associated with not wearing amps.
Actualy, I don't like not having amps with a high speed bonus.
So, yeah, anything other than light armor would not be good at all.

the max verses doesnt always mean you'll protect for that amount. Note also the max % damage you can resist against. For example if it does 50 damage and you can resist 2% from your armour it will do 49 damage instead. Also note the different armour pieces protection doesnt stack, it relates to if the mob hits that area of your body.
The main advantage of light armour is things like hp boosts, to give your main stats a raise

That is incorrect. Light armour has no penalty.
Requirements armours:
Light - No requirement at all
Medium - 66% truncated up i.e. lvl 100 Medium requires 66, lvl 140 medium would require 93 const.
Heavy - 90% (i.e. lvl 100 HA would require 90 const)
The one thing omitted here in deciding MA vs HA is that you can also wear higher lvl MA Then HA at any lvl. This is important because of boosts. if you had 70 constition you could wear lvl 100 medium armour but only lvl 80 heavy armour. Each pc of that MA could carry up to 50 boost while the heavy would cary up to 40 boost per piece.
Action Malus (Penalty)
LA none
MA 7.9
HA 20
This means if your spell were to consume 100 sap.
Then with LA on it would remain at 100 sap per cast and the range would remain the same.
With one piece of Medium armour it owuld take 100 + (100*.079) or 108 sap per cast.
WIth one piece of Heavy armour on it would take 100+(100*.20) or 120 sap per cast
Remeber medium armour has no helmet so it would be 5*7.9 for an entire set of MA to calculate penalty. And heavy has 6 pieces so it would be 6*20. You can mix and match to have a penalty you prefer/proteciton preference or just style.
Range would be reduced by the same way.
Cast time would be increased by the same way.
Lastly
Proteciton factors for about choice level armours (rought estimate):
Light will have around 9%ish with max versus pierce/slash/smash at about 33% of the level of the armour.
Medium armour will have arond 20%ish and with max versus pierce/slash/smash about the same as the level of the armour.
Heavy armour will have arond 50%ish and max versus pierce/slash/smash about 2 times the level of the armour.

Otherwise known as:
You can wear medium armour of a quality = 1.5x (x150%) your constitution - 100const -> q150 med armour
You can wear heavy armour of a quality 10 above your const - const100 -> q110 heavy armour

That is incorrect.

q100 armor is only example where 90% formula holds true.
And to actually add something to this discussion, I would like to point that good light armor can give bonus to your dodge and heavy armor bonus to your parry. If you want to be mainly mage, look for light armor that gives dodge bonus +2 per piece.
