The refugee amplifier I started with doesn't like to amplify my level 10+ spells. Is there anywhere on the newbie island to buy a better one?

Speaking of the newbie island... I'm magic 11, fighting 7, but still seem to be too weak to travel to another village without dying. How many more Yubo do I need to kill before I can beat Ragus reliably?

Magic amplifiers are sold by the two-handed melee weapon merchant. (There's a one-handed melee weapon merchant too and both of them are called "melee weapon merchant", but the one wielding the bigger sword is the two-handed one.) However, whether there are any for sale depends on whether there are any amplifier crafters active on the refugee island. If there aren't any, your only choice is to pick up amplifier crafting yourself and make your own q20 amplifier.

If I recall a puny ragus is level 19, so at level 20 you should be about an even match. But even at level 30 they still killed me occasionaly if I'd have to fight two or three in quick succession.
If I may make a suggestion, practice in avoiding the ragus and try to travel to other villages without being seen by the predators. It seems hard at first, I still remember, but it's definitely possible, and learning to sneak is as important as gaining levels. You'll likely be doing a lot more of it on the mainland. As a few starting tips, try moving along the edge of the island as much as possible, and spent some skill points to get the speeding up power, it's very usefull for escaping from creatures.

Is there any way to tell what level something is? Or maybe a /consider command that will tell me how hard a fight is going to be? 1x<yellow star> and 2x<yellow star> seem to be on just about everything on the newbie island. And there's definately a big range of difficulty there.

No luck on the amplifier, and I took the default kit, so no crafting without spending 5 levels worth of skill points on it. Maybe I'll make an alt and sell one to myself.

Short answer: Sorry, no such thing.
Long answer: The stars don't give a good indication at all, two creatures with the same amount of stars can vary hugely in difficulty. Stars only help to determine whether a varient of a species is more or less powerfull than other varients of the same species. (For example a three star yubo will be more powerfull than a two star yubo, but not necesarily more powerfull than a two star ragus.) You can't tell what level something is until you kill it and quarter something from it. And level alone is a poor measure of difficulty anyway, a level 170 arma is a lot easier to fight than a level 130 kincher. The only reliable way to find out how difficult a creature is, is just to try and fight it. Though if the creature is a predator, you can also get a fair estimate of it's dificulty by watching it fight the local herbivores.

Level 10 in melee is about where you can travel between villages safely. You need the hit points, self heal and a weapon better than the starting dagger. You may die at a much higher level if you get surprised after a tough fight, but by the mid-teens you can be fairly confident traveling if you watch out for agro mobs.

SoR is a skill based system doesn't and can't have the level based con system of other games. There are a few things gaining a level will help you with immediately, but for the most part you have to train and spend the skill points you gain for the benefits of a new level. A lot of difficulty depends on your equipment, specially starting out. Going from the starting dagger or amp to a player made quality 20 weapon or amp will make the ragus that was certain death into an easy fight. (Just watch out for his 3 friends, the ragus' special power is to summon his pack mates.)

There are six measures of difficulty in SoR:
1) Stars
2) Mob Names
3) Mob size - repeats in different zones
4) Color - based on zone, but there are some exceptions
5) Quality of mats the mob drops (sorry you have to kill one to see this)
6) Your experience

In each zone there are four types of each species which are assigned 1 to 5 stars. Some mobs may top out at 3 stars while the toughest of others will have 5 stars.

Each type of mob (carnivore, kitin, bird, etc.) will follow the same naming convention. They enable you to tell if something unfamiliar is a predator or prey.

The tougher a mob, the bigger it is. A 1 star blue Vigorous Kipee is the same size as a 1 star red Nettled Kipee.

The actual level of the mob is indicated by the level of mats it drops. The level determines how much experience you or your team gets.

You can use these indicators to judge the relative difficulty in a new area (hmm, the scary ragus is 1 star but the scary torbak is 2 star; moral if you almost die from the scary ragus, avoid the scrary torbak), but con is your own experience.

In search of magic amps.. If you visit the melee weopon merchants, click the button on the bottom right that says "rm item part" ( or something like that), and you will see a list of the item types the merchant stocks.. if Amps arent there - you have the wrong merchant , but if they are, select the amp, and the merchant will only show you the amps, and no other merchandise.
Providing you havent changed any filters for price or level or quality, that will be his entire stock.

I am slowly working towards an amp crafter for Tryker island, and expect to gain wealth beyond the dreams of avarice once I can provide q 20 amps for other players

I have to correct you here:

Level 1- 20 green
Level 1- 50 blue
Level 51-100 yellow
Level 101-150 orange
Level 151-200 red
Level 201-250 purple

One black Star is 10 level higher than the highest level in that color range.
Two black Stars are 20 level higher than the highest level in that color range.


Use the level ranges as estimations, eg. the Menacing Clopper ( 5 Star, yellow ) is level 102 if I remember correctly. I take each star as a roughly 10 level range.

You'll learn the con system after a while. It's not that difficult but you will find that the difference in difficulty occurs right the way up to the top levels of Ryzom. A Kizoar and a Torbak of the same level are very different in terms of difficulty. As for the ragus? You can make a lot of experience quickly from killing weeny ragus and that trains you quite well for fighting the puny when you need to. Don't be afraid of dying early on to find out how hard something is, it'll hold you in good stead for later and doesn't hurt your xp so bad when you're low level. Don't worry yourself too much about the amp though. When you venture to the mainland if you ask for one of a low level, you might even get it for free. We're friendly like that!

To add to the list above:
Another thing to keep in mind is the type of weapon/offensive magic you use.

For example a piercing weapon might have a different effect than a smashing weapon on one mob even when on another species they deal the same damage (notice the number in parentheses compared to the number next to it in the system message window when dealing damage, if they are different it usually means the species is resistant somewhat to damage from that type of weapon).

Also, some species are resistant to/not effected by certain types of magic while the opposite may be true of others. Thus it is a good idea to carry an extra weapon of a different damage type and to have more than one type of offensive magic.
