This confusion is caused by vBulletin, which is the spawn of satan (OK so it's fairly good, but it certainly has it's problems...)

Basically, from the main forum page, view one of the forums. Scroll down past the topics, and you'll see the forum jump dropdown box. In there, scroll to the top and click 'User Control Panel'. From that page, lots of tweaking will be available

tip: you can also simply clicl on "Private Messages" on the top right corner
