I'm overwhelmed!

Alright, the client is downloading (Thank the Goddess for Broadband) and I'm nattering away with my girlfriend about the various features we've read about on the site. But I'm absolutely overwhelmed by the amount of lore and faction stuff.

-_-

Simply put, how easy is it to get going with the game? Right now, I'm just planning to hit things - repeatedly - until they die and work my way up to more complicated things later on. The Karavan look ABSOLUTELY REALLY NIFTY (Gasmasks = hawt), but - as I said - all this stuff is bloody confusing.

Myself and my partner are Roleplayers first and foremost, but we both enjoy (mostly) solo Player Vs Enviroment stuff. Will we fit in well? Our latest MMORPGs have been City of Heroes and World of Warcraft, for what it's worth.

/goes to wait two hours for the client.

Welcome :)
Yes, I'll admit the lore does appear a bit confusing at first :) . You might wanna try the basic parts of it, that is the parts about Atys. Then you can move on to the Homins and the Higher Powers when you have more time. Oh and when you create your character, you have a little button that says "Info" that will give you the basic outline of each of the four races.

There are a couple well made beginners guides in the player section of the forums, as well as a few pointers in the new forum section called "Newcomer Welcome Board". If you have any questions, please feel free to ask, and we'll answer as best we can.
Killing things repeatedly.. yes you can do that as soon as you start :) . And you won't have to choose your side between Kami and Karavan right away (although Tryker and Matis are allied traditionally to the Karavan and Fyros and Zorai to the Kami). My advice would be start one char of each... and see which you like best ;) .

There is quite a bit of RP done in Ryzom, some players are more dedicated then others (one of the threads in the newcomers section actually deals about that). But people will generally play along if you want to RP :) . And PvP is not an obligation really, although it's starting to be more and more present in the game. But for now it's mostly a PvE world.

Hope you enjoy your stay :) .

Most of the lore is fairly subjective anyway. Read the history and you'll get the broad picture but facts on the major powers involved in the shaping of hominkind are few and far between. Is Jena coming to save or destroy? Is Ma-Duk intent on our destruction or just wanting us to live in harmony on Atys? Who or what is 'The Dragon'? Why does that Ragus keep staring at me? AHHH, IT'S GOT MY LEG!!! PAIN....SEARING.....THROUGH MY.....BODY! feeling weak. losing con... <gasp>

Ok, thanks for the swift replies, guys. I'll spend the next hour or so pootling about on the newbie forum and see what I can dig up. So far all the signs are pretty good!

One other question though; I'm a little unclear on the skill system. Can you keep rejiggling where your points are, or are your choices permanent? I'm probably just misreading things - although in my defense it's rapidly approaching midnight - but it's good to get these things cleared up.

Oh...oh...! Second question....!

Is it possible to be a "pure" ranged fighter? One thing that always got me about MMORPGs is that one you were in melee, all those nifty ranged abilities you've wracked up over time become null and void. I'm not expecting to deliver Ebil Sniper Shot Of Doom at point blank range, but I'm irritatingly purist; either go full out with one combat area, or don't bother at all.

Up with one-mindedness!

Your choices are final. Once you buy skills, you have them ,there is no kind of refund possible. However, don't worry, you'll find a time where there are more skill points than skills to buy, if you level all the branches in one tree. So if you think you've made a wrong choice... well you can always correct it later on ;) .

It is. The best known to me is Crythos so I'll let him answer this more specifically (as soon as he notices this post or wakes up ;) ). Range does very little damage compared to the other branches of fighting, but yes, you can be a pur range fighter. But I'm not sure a lvl 250 range fighter could kill a lvl 250 mob without running out of ammunition ;) .

I disagree you cant be a pure range fighter. Be prepared to become a master of digging materials for ammo and a master range crafter as well. The best way to ensure having good ammunition is to dig the mats and make it yourself. Besides you'll easily go bankrupt if you dont. :D

I'm a master of moles and a master maker of shiny things :P Trust me when i say you can easily shoot till your broke. :p

Ah-ha. So my character is finalised! Hawt ranged fighter with lots of digging and crafting.

>.>

<.<

One final question before I - truly! - dissapear for a while:

I have a fetish. A huge, amazing earth-shattering fetish: gas-masks, bio hazard suits and black leather. Would character customisation allow me to pull that look off? I've been looking over some Karavan ([snerk]) screenshots, and they're veeeeeeery similar to the sort of thing that gets me frisky. In a manner of speaking, that is.

Ahem.

Look! AN OBVIOUS DISTRACTION!

Try the the Fyros Heavy Armor Helmet for the Dune Gas Mask look.

Can't help you with the black leather, I am "not into" that kind of "things".
