Errr... I find those things play against the game:

- people in a group dont necessarily have it; so you look like a mute to them. Or they could have it on a different server/channel, but the problem remains the same.

- it disrupts the immersion in the game... ooh the cute trykerette... hello [insert big loud hell's angel style voice] hello.

- adds load on the CPU, although it could be run on a different computer easily.

- you have to remember everyone's voice, or have an overhead display of who's talking.

- several people speaking at the same time make a big mess.

All in all, mmorpgs and teamspeak stuff are both working around communication; but mixing both adds tons of confusion and distraction and other problems that make the game harder to play.

Well, I for one am one person who will most likely *never* try out voice com in any game (all possible performance and quality issues aside).
If I were playing online games regurlarly with a group of friends I knew well (I do not have any that fall into that category at the moment :) ) I might consider it, but honestly, actually having to converse (or rather try to converse) with a number of people, some of whom you may relate well enough to in writing, has all the potential for becoming a nightmare if you ask me.

Trying to decipher what five or more people with various degrees of skill in the (spoken) English language are saying, gender not matching that of their character, of different age and/or maturity, some perhaps with a bit of a temper that is much more easily managed in writing (or not :) ).
Ouch! My head is hurting immensely, and I feel like screaming out in horror just thinking about it :) .

But for those of you who can cope with it - or play almost exclusively with friends, I am sure voice communication in especially combat situations can be very effective.
No chance people will ever hear my voice though - no matter if we become friends in this game or another.

Some good points there guys, but personally i found that during the 18 mths I spent playing Planetside, having a squad of 10 players who played together regularly, ALWAYS using voice comms made for some of the best and most realistic gameplay experiences I have EVER had. I know that in RPGs theres always the argument that it spoils the immersion (but somehow typing on a keyboard keeps it 'real'??). I just wish the opton for voice comms was there in game for those who can type at a million miles an hr ;)

And as someone who has been a hardcore gamer since my early days writing machine code games on the Sinclair ZX80/81 (yes I really am in my late 30's) Ive had a lot of experience! This is my first MMORPG tho, and as a total noob to the genre I have to say Im lovin it, not least because of the really helpful and fun community. Keep it up guys!

Err... don't mix PlanetSide and MMORPG's please... it's not like you have much time to type anything in PlanetSide without getting wasted, the pace is really not the same, and the level of organisation in a squad doesnt reflect anything similar in MMORPG's where combat is mostly static, you pull and fight on a spot, you don't need to run for cover while spraying an area with barrage fire all the while trying to coordinate a diversion and a hack on a door right? The tank in a mmorpg has all the time in the world to type whatever needs to be said; in the worst case scenario you always have the possibility to macro some typical requests like: heal, assist, inc, etc...

BTW... PlanetSide on Werner? My outfit (ISK) used TeamSpeak as well...

well i for 1 play with 4 others on a nitely basis an have a great laf when harvesting near(100yrds away) near friends an they are raisin fighter lvl,s an they happen 2 die i can then b able 2 hear b4 hand they are goin 2 die an they need sm help unless they have sm kind of raise the dead i wouldn,t know until they got the time plus its funny listen 2 m8s hrhr when they know there goin 2 die an u (hero) in an save the day RAH!!! we use it on a day 2 day basis an find in much easier 2 say right i got this thing are we ready hit it m8 lol RAH pile onnnnnnn...........

Canrupid is away atm but back on topic we've been using TS in our guild a bit and frankly its fantastic. As for an open TS server for anyone to use I dont know of one sorry.

Those of you who doubt should at least try it. Its fun, easy and great for really getting to know who it is you're playing with. We keep the roleplay in our in-game chat but talk normally on teamspeak. We have players from all over the world and thier english is good, no problems understanding accents or anything like that. You'd be surprised how much it can add to the game experiance both in game and the social aspect.

When it comes to combat you really cant fault it. Takes a second to say "Guys flank round the back of that raspal there, I've got a gingo on me someone stun It while I heal you for the raspal." Try typing that sentance while youre HP are dropping fast and you have half a dozen buttons to push... you'll end up typing something like "help i r diening, gingp on meh!" which doesnt mean anything to anyone.

TS or Vent is a must for any serious MMO guild, and therfore player.

Preferably get both clients, theyre free.

The level of sheer co-ordination, whether its farming/pvping/grouping etc, from utilizing a voice-com cant be matched by a group of players without it.
Let alone the fact it makes the grind more interesting by far when you have people to chat too.

Having said all that, I don't have any TS or Vent server info for Ryzom; but I'd also love to know if there are any about, or even a guild which has either yet who is recruiting...

i still havent tried vent, i need to download it, i've used voice comms in almost every mmo fps game since they first arrived, they can make the game. simple as that, if you are too shy to speak to someone or whatever, dont use it, but it doesnt have anything to do with immersion etc, you can roleplay ingame and be f'ing and blinding at the person you're talking to..

But most importantly, voice comms in unparalled when you need help or backup. Text chat can be missed, lagged.. ignored, wrong window.. misunderstood..

Scream at someone on vc and you can talk them in, on planetside it made the game, as a stealther i often talked in air strikes and land forces giving them precise go left abit right abit etc instructions to locate and destroy the enemie, same for battlefield1942 and in doac. Organising assaults, getting backup etc it makes the game whole. You ARE there.

Any THEY are all THERE. You wont understand until you know.

There can be problems, like not understanding people or thier inches sometimes you have to share a chatroom with someone you dont like or have fallen out with, although you can ignore them, unlike in ryzoms, where ignore doesnt work..but overall, vc makes the game.

To make the original question more specific, anyone using voice comms in fyros lands? If you dont mind me voicing my opinions, chatting up your girlfriends, wives and mothers... give me a shout ingame with details.

absolutely must disagree, planetside is just as much an mmo as swg or eq or ryzoms. Define roleplaying. Battlefield 1942 is roleplaying.. you are a medic you heal people, just because in doac you're a cleric there is no difference.

As for need? How quickly can you warn someone that theres a gringo on thier right and a goari on thier left? and they can read it and comprehend it.

mmos can be hectic, look at the camps in everquest... your main pulls 1 mob and five turn up. voice comms can co ordinate much faster then anyone can type and understand whats being said. Saves lives.

Also...and the one massive improvement voice comms as over anything else.

YOU KNOW IF THE GIRL IN THE GAME IS A GIRL IN REAL LIFE OR NOT.
