How do resists work? At the moment all of mine are 33, with two or three enhanced to fifty-something by jewelry. What is the optimal/max resist number?

The base numbers are based off your magic level. Jewelry can be crafted with resists that boost these base resist numbers.
I have no idea what the exact formula is as I've not really paid attention and I don't know what the max resist number is.
As another data point, mine are all 111 and I'm 136 in elemental magic. My acid and cold resistance are both 186 as the Q200 focus jewelry I happen to be wearing right now has acid resistance on some peices and cold resistance on others. So the Q200 jewelry appears to be boosting it by 75.
The jewelry resistances don't stack. Like having 2 peices of jewelry with cold protection doesn't give any more resistance than wearing 1 piece of jewelry (assuming the same level of jewelry).

225 all is max base resist then ya can add another 25 with jewels jewels made with diff ambers or things like amber heh = diff resist types so ya can get 250 resist for 10 diff spells max

My elemental magic is at 158, and my base resist is 133, with jewelry bonus it's 158. So it would seem your magic resistance is equal to your highest magic level minus 25, with jewelry adding 25.
But then, how does magic resistance work if you're below level 25, and how does Oshido get 75 extra from jewelry?

I'm wondering the same. I went back and double-checked just to make sure and I definitely get +75 on cold when I put on one piece of my Q200 focus jewelry that has a cold resistance. Same for acid.

Resistance is higest mele or mage level minus 25. Resitance can be increased up to your max mele or mage level if the quality of the jewlry is at least as high as your highest lvl. I am AOD and thus my naked base resits are 225 across the board. Depending on the mats used to craft jewlry various resistance can be added to the jewelry. If I wear Acid protection jewlry Qlvl 250 then all my resists will be 225 except acid that will be 250. Obviously since there are 10 pcs to a set multiple resists can be improved.
As for Oshido I have no clue . All my observations have been that jewlry can remove the only the -25 taken of highest lvl. That is jewelry if high enough can boost your reistance by 25.

With jewels resistance is equal to highest level. This includes foraging and harvesting. I bet that Oshido got +75 that way.

Natural resist is based on combat skills and jewelry can boost it to you max (including non combat) skills. I guess Oshido's highest level isn't combat (or I'm lost again)
x = max(melee, magic, harvest/2, craft/2?)
L = max Level
l = x-25 your natural resist
q = jewel qual
r = min(max(q,l), L)
or something like that
Ani
edit: forgot the harvest.. what about craft? do we know a player with a highest level in crafting?
@sinful : noob

Yep, that's exactly it. My harvest level is 186.

Yep its :-
Base Resist = (Highest combat branch - 25) or (1/2 Highest non combat branch - 25) whichever is highest
Max Resist = (Jewel Quality) or (Highest lvl in
Any branch) whichever is the lowest
afaik
Ael added the 1/2 non combat base resist piece of the puzzle...

Still havent gotten round to testing how a very high resist with a low combat lvl helps things (obviously it will but what your effective lvl will be especialy in a PvP situation is yet to be determined) , ive also heard that resists are less than relieable (bugged?) in this situation...
