I agree with Basic. For the starting packs when you create your character, pick all but melee and then just go pick up a weapon at the weapon merchant.

Ryzom doesn't have classes like a lot of other games. The skill system doesn't impose any limits. One character can gain all of the skills in the game, no matter what you choose when creating the character.

So don't worry a ton over these selections. Once you're in the game, you can try things out and see what you like to do and then develop those skills. Later on, if you decide you want to try something totally different, you can work on other skills. There's no cap or tradeoffs imposed.

Once you get a little money (harvesting mats and selling them or quartering kills and selling the mats you get), go to the melee weapon merchant and find a good 2 handed weapon. This will help you level fight much quicker. Note: there are 2 melee weapon merchants, one that sells 1H weapons and one that sells 2H weapons.

You don't even need to buy a weapon right away. Just walk out and kick a yubo in the head. It worked for me. :)

Even if you don't plan to dig or craft right away, get those starting packs to avoid the really expensive startup skill.

There is some good stuff in beginner's guides section in this forum.

learn the basics of healing.. then even if you join a party of much higher level characters, fighting mobs that you couldnt lay a touch on yourself, you can still make a contribution to the team (and get xp)
also is essential for resurrecting clumsy/unfortunate/overconfidant fellow homins :D

Taunt is another incredibly useful skill - but possibly not necessary until after maybe level 30?

Hello and welcome to Ryzom and the world of Atys zach.

I concur with mmatto. I'd read through the beginner's guides, http://www.ryzom.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=18 , as well as the other guides in the player guides area.

That and post your questions here on the forums too. We'll be more than happy to help you out. :)

I'll second that. I did the mistake of picking a Melee starter pack.

I still can't afford the 50sp it takes to by the craft skill. I have only been playing for a week, so I may be able to spare 50sp some time soon.

Yeah, the crafting and harvesting starting skills are expensive when you're low level.

However, in the long run, you'll have WAY more skill points than you know what to do with. So if you end up training in the wrong skill at some point or feel like you made a mistake in your choices, you really don't need to start over like in some games. Somewhere around L100 in fight and magic, you'll be in a situation where you're wondering what skills you should try to get rid of some of the extra SP.

This should really be one of the improvements that the new people get. This is an awful system that without knowledge just hinders you.

Forget the starter packs Nevrax. Give everyone the basic abilities to Fight(dagger & accurate attack), Magic(Amps and Acid spell), Craft(Choice of crafting tool and plan), and Harvest(Pick, Extract, and Prospect). You tout a classless system make that evident immediately.

I think the one thing you could do after making the above change to provide the basics in each of these is to give the choice of 2 Add-ons.

Say you have 15 or so other items to choose from and you can choose 2 of them.

Some ideas.
* A 1-hand sword
* A second dagger
* The increase Damage skill
* A better Amp
* The Fear Spell
* A HP Heal Spell
* Another crafting plan
* More generic Raw material
* The 5m prospect skill
* The upto Fine or Fine only prospect brick
...

I am going to start a seperate thread for this also.

Just my thoughts on making the start more fun.

Noin.
