camera-inhibited gameplay?

I've been playing SoR for a while (since Beta) and, while i generally like the overall gameplay, i don't like that fact that you can't zoom out from your character really far. This makes it hard to see if anything is attacking you from behind, especially if you are already engaged with another target in combat. I usually get disorientated when engaged by an unexpected aggro.

I know that there's ways to work around this, and the camera can be really nicely manipulated with the mouse, but i feel that being able to zoom out would make it that much easier to play. ANd, i don't have directional speakers (use headphones) so i can't tell by sounds which direction an attack is coming from).

Am i just being pedantic, or are there other people who feel the same way? Or have i missed out doing something which will allow me to zoom back further?

Cheers,

if you zoom out too far you lose detail and ryzom is all about detail atm as there isnt much else to do but look at your char ;P

ive never found the zoom much of a problem. atleast not after i bought a mouse where i could adjust the zoom before i had it stuck at the default as there is no key to change it ;P

It can be very helpful to use the numpad zero key, for a quick look directly behind you.

Great when running to see if anything is following, or when in a fight to see if there are any mobs on your mages. Not the same as more distant zoom... but helpful.

Also, the 1 and 2 keys on the number pad will rotate the camera around without changing your avatar direction. I find this handy when harvesting as I can spin the camera to look all around me. I also find it handy when trekking as I can be running by a mob and turn the camera to look sideways as I pass the mob.

By the way, the '.' key on the number pad returns the camera to centered behind your avatar.

btw, is there a key to move camera up and down in similar manner than 1&2 rotate sideways? I ask this because yesterday Wylin was standing on top of hill and I was harvesting just next that hill.

Wylin hits you for 4496 damage *ouch*

Instead of using the 1 and 2 keys, I just left click and drag with the mouse. Rotates the camera any way you want around your avatar without changing the direction you're facing. Including up and down.

Yep, you can do that. But a lot of people prefer the keyboard. In my case, I use the mouse to initiate actions and target things and the keyboard for movement and camera positioning for the most part.
