good reading, thanks Dagger :)

This line from the first GameSpy article pretty much summed up my current feeling about it.

"Let's hope the whole thing doesn't blow up in its face, 'cause how cool would it be if it worked out?" :D

and LOL. IGN said "Neverax". HAHAHAHAHAHA.

edit to add:

I was a tad unhappy when I heard about the fee for Nevrax to host your creation, but from the gamemethod article, it mentioned that "The current plan is to offer Ryzom Ring throught both a limited free plan and an unlimited use plan with a to-be-determined montly fee."

I really hope this this is the case.

You get bits and pieces of the big picture reading all those articles but I think that gamemethod.com article had the best info.

It seems to me that you'll not only need this expansion to create the content but to play in it as well. I really hope this doesn't backfire on them. What I hope they'll release with is a few dev created instances showing us what can be done with the tools and have these further the story a bit. That alone would have me buying the thing.

A bit of a sidetrack... did anyone notice how big instances are playing a part in MMOs now? Almost every game I was looking forward to was pushing this feature to the front. Quite a change from just 2 years ago. Was there anything like it before City of Heros? That's the first MMO that made me take notice of it.

Didnt they tell us that the expansion was free for all paying customers?

I dont think any of us are going to pay more to be able to play in the custom made areas.

Remember that reporters usually mix up all details.

I dont think that you need to buy the ring expansion to play the player created maps. The maps will be build of the existing 4 GByte library which everyone has installed allready. In this case players only need to download the description of the map. Everything else would be insane.

About instances. I think this is a thing out of the succress story of MMO. Its not only about drop-steal and griefing, it is a problem of design. It is more possible to design a good game experience if only one team is allowed to enter and the instance is designed for a predefinded range of levels. Although, to be true, instanced areas are no longer MMO due to the lack of "Massive" :D

If the ring tools are good enough, we players (and btw. Nevrax staff too !!) have the abillity to build real good stuff. From RP pure to hardcore raids with limited playeracces everything will be possible.

Right, the thing I see with this (and one that I think some might not immediate see), is that this isn't just a "cool toy" for modders, and that the ryzom-ring expansion only appeal and excite people who likes to mod.

Even if you don't want nothing to do with the modding tools, imagine a game where you have countless contents, from the easily predictable to the unimaginable. Even if you were to be just a "player" in SoR, you still would benefit much from it.

I am not only excited about the ability to play "god", I am also very excited about the ability to experience the worlds that other "gods" will be creating :)

Just out of consideration, did anyone else realize that this could be used to set it up so that mobs like Aen and the like couldn't be KSed? There would, of course be only a fiew 'instances' active at one time, but everybody would have a chance at her armor (kinda), and there wouldn't be anymore of this 'he did more damage than me, so he got the armor instead of me, *cries into his beer*' stuff. Might actualy be kinda nice.
