Yeah, the box comes with a free month but a credit card (or similar) is required to subscibe.

Like the vast majority of online games, yes you do have to enter cc number at registration. A small amount is charged to your card and instantly refunded so that they can verify you are who you say are.

Every game I've played so far does this (and I've played all the major ones out there).
