My video card died...anyone know.......

My video card died on me Thursday night, my good 'ol MSI Radeon 9800Pro. It was my fault as I had hard modded it about 6 months back and been running it as a 9800XT, and I guess the strain was too much on the 'ole girl.

Anyhow, I've ordered a new one, but its currently out of stock. Looking through my old pc parts laying around, I had a 3 and half year old Radeon 7200 64mb card that I decided to pop in and give a whirl. I turned down all my settings to the lowest possible and tried running Ryzom at the lowest resolution, 1027 X 768 . Auggggggggh. While Ryzom ran, it only is running between 5 to 10 fps....felt like a puppet on strings being played by a drunken puppet master. I then try turning my monitor resolution down to 800 X 600 and running the game in Windowed mode. I was able to get 10 to 15 fps then, but still very unplayable especially when more than a few toons, mobs or npcs were on the screen at one time when it would drop back to around 5 fps.

Is there anything else I can do to improve the game play with the Radeon 7200 or should I just wait till my new card gets here and use my free time to go and see a movie, read a book or play on my neglected Xbox???

My system specs are as follows:

AMD s754 Athlon 64 3000+ oc'ed to 2.35ghz
ASUS K8V SE Deluxe board
using onboard sound
1gb of DDR400 ram oc'ed to 470mhz
interim Radeon 7200 64mb video card
two 74gb WD 10K rpm raptor HDs in raid 0 config

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Signed, Ryzom addict going through withdrawels.

A few ideas

-Disable sound
-Check BIOS AGP settings
-Advanced setting for the card, setting performance and quality (etc.) to fast/lowest
-Borrow a better card ;)

Did you try to disable shaders already?

Aye, disabled shaders already, and I also got everything set to performance. I haven't tried disabling sound. I'll give they a shot and see if it squeezes a few more fps out. I can play at 10 to 15 fps, but its when several toons, npcs and/or mobs are trying to be rendered at one time that is when I have problems. The card just can't cope with it and fps drops down slow low that I feel like I'm watching a silent movie from the early 1900s.

LoL majick1. I wish I could borrow a better card. I lent a 9200pro to a friend I play america's army with, and I could've fell back on that. No worries though. I'll try the suggestions, and thanks btw. It won't be long till the new card gets here...hopefully this week.

If anyone else has any advice that hasn't been covered, please, feel free to chime in.

Thanks again.

Also try swapping between OpenGL and DirectX, it might run better in one of them.

BTW At least you have spare hardware, makes incidents like that a bit easier to handle (and gives a few extra geek points). :D

aye, that is true magick1.

I've tried all the suggestions, and about the best fps I get is 15 fps still, which drops as soon as a few toons, mobs or npcs are on screen. No worries though as the new card will be here hopefully Tuesday. Thanks to everyone for you help. Don't kill to many kitin without me or tell to many stories whilest I'm away.

I'm not tied to a particular brand. In my opinion, both ATI and nVidia make really good GPUs. I buy these best pc parts that are allowed within my budget. For around $150 and a little under, the agp keyed Radeon 9800 Pro is still the best card in that range. If I had the money though amist, I would upgrade to a nVidia 6800GT.

That being said, my new MSI Radeon 9800Pro finally came this afternoon, YAY!!!! Lesson learned, won't hard mod this one. Will see everyone in Atys this weekend. Woot!!!

Thanks again for everyone's help.
