At around 06:00 CET (04:00 am GMT // 05:00 am BST // 0:00 EST) this morning, we were forced to shutdown all Saga Of Ryzom Servers due to a hardware failure in the backup system.
We are currently in the process of replacing the faulty physical server with brand spanking new hardware. We expect to complete this process within the next 2-3 hours and we estimate all shards to be back online at around 14:00 CET (12:00 am GMT // 01:00 pm BST // 08:00 am EST).
Sorry for the inconvenience this has caused, folks!

Let me get this straight. You have back up systems for fault tolerance and if they go down or have problems the main or working environment has to be taken down?
You should work on your fault tolerance mechanisms I think.

I read it more like that they had problem with data backup system.
Depending of severity of these problems, it may have been very good idea to close down the live servers.

Basically, the servers that runs the backup system (you know, the servers that hold the previous save information for restore purposes) hardware failed. Now this can and has happened to anyone's systems, as I've worked in Technical support for the last 8 years.
Why they shutdown the main servers, was to stop them from saving any information, incase something goes wrong and they needed to restore from the backup system that was not working at the time.

The problem has been fixed - I'll close this thread in order to avoid confusion.
