Okay was talking to a friend about forums and such and ended up getting around to signatures.
Bit of a pet peeve of mine is people who use big images in their sigs. I hate this with great passion. I turn off sigs if even one person uses them.
Because of this pet peeve I mentioned how happy I was that the Ryzom forums doesn't allow the img tag in sigs. Of course my friend decided to be annoying and disagreed with me
So here's my question to you.
Do you like images in sig files on forums?
(specifically in referance to these forums)

Well...yes and no hehe
I like having a little freedom for people to have an img signature but it shouldnt be too big nor affect the readability of threads in any way.
The nice thing is that way people have a chance to express themselves or their guild.
Another nice thing is, if you hate sig images, you can turn them off
Anyway the reason id like img signatures is to be able to express the guild youre in, char profile stuff related to the game like that, also i find it a joy to see what creative people make out of their banners
looking at the signatures people have atm on these forums, 6/7 lines of bold and sometimes even capital letters in diff colors and xfire profiles and the like, i dont think img banners will take more space, nor annoyance as at least the img sigs can be turned off so they arent displayed, the 6/7 lines of capital colored letters text unfortunatly arent possible to turn off well maybe they are tho, never looked into that.
Anyway my point: Turning img code on with specific rules about the sizes of those img's (in resolution and filezise) is an addition whihc is only a nice extra freedom, you dont like them? Turn them off, you do like them/ have one and turn them on!

So in that way everyone can have what they want and just my personal 2 cents: i rather look at very creatively made artistic banners then 7 lines of capital colored letters and xfire profiles

Very good points. And it would be nice if guilds could have little images for their guild members. Maybe their crest.
But you see the problem is that I've found is that the images don't stay small. They end up being these big banner sized things that sing and dance.
I personally don't like having to turn off signatures. Especially here, where someone's username may not be the same as their character name. So its really useful to see sigs.

I don't use img sigs myself, but I know a lot of people like them. As long as they're limited in size to prevent issues with page loading, I don't see why they should not be allowed.

There wouldn't be any way to limit the size though. the IMG tage is the same as the img src tag in HTMl. So there's no way inthe forums to limit the size of the image since its an external image link.

Very true, theres forums using serverspace to store banners tho, to have more control over loading times, filesizes and resolution caps
then again the problem with that is it takes extra maintainance and server recources.

Also very true

hehe the solution to that is standardizing those signature with both plain text charname sig and the optional img sig

You forgot extra hard drive space. That's the biggie really.

First of apologizes for reviving an old thread but search made me stumble over it. Personally I find the lack of signature banners very sad. It is a awesome and creative feature and I'm used to make such and would be willing to provide them to the community as well.
Anyway in regards to the quote you can limit it in any way possible even with out-of-the-box features of this bulletin software? No issue there but as not even the COPPA crap is sorted out till today... People administrating this forum software isn't really hard.
Even with a simple addon you can give the community this flexibility to have or not have signature images. Just take a look
here in case this version isn't supporting it out of the box. Easy to use and official addon

Since I didn't see this the first time around; yes but not too huge. On the other hand I can imagine plenty of
these floating around
