Information on timezone differences for events

Post by kibsword »

I thought as we are merging the servers we should have a reference for timezones from Europe, UK and North America. I hope this will be of use for anyone making an event or wanting to know their local time for an event.

I shall say that GMT is the main timezone, and do all the others in relation for that. I shall also provide an example of what the time is in other timezones at 12noon GMT.

PDT (West Coast US) - GMT-7 - 5am
EDT (East Coast US) - GMT-4 - 8am
GMT - GMT+0 - 12noon
BST (UK time) - GMT+1 - 1pm
CEST (Central Europe, France & Germany etc) - GMT+2 - 2pm

I shall try my best to update this list when there are changes such as summer time, and if anyone wants to add any to this list please give me the details and I shall do so :)

im probably just being really stupid, but could someone explain to me why BST is GMT +1
if BST stands for british summer time and GMT is the time used in england, why is BST an hour different to GMT ?

In short, daylight saving does not affect GMT. In summer brits use BST instead of GMT.

GMT is a worldwide reference time and never changes. In spring, the clocks go forward an hour and hence the time in the UK becomes BST (or GMT+1). In Autumn (fall), the clocks go back an hour, and UK reverts to GMT.

Im sorry to say that CET is only +1 from GMT check in windows XP and you will see that. I live in Sweden and we have GMT +1 but Finland have GMT +2. I checked in windows myself and we have GMT +1 like Amsterdam, Berlin, Bern, Rom, Stockholm (capital of Sweden if you didnt know that) and Wien. :)

It's true that CET is normally called GMT +1.. but since we're also on daylight savings, we are currently running GMT +2 (because as mentioned, GMT aka Zulu time never changes.)
