Questions from a humble noob...mock me all you like!

Post by gocjeffe »

Hey hey, I'm a Ryzom noob. I love the game so far (played Star Wars Galaxies for over a year...there are lots of similarities), but I'm either too stupid or too lazy to figure out the following, so any help you can offer would be much appreciated. It's help-a-noob day...haven't you heard?

Background: I'm in Yrkanis...levelled up to 10 in fight and magic on noob island, and now I'm level 14 or so in both. I generally prefer fighting, and didn't plan on harvesting or crafting much.

So, on to the questions...

1-Which NPCs do I buy clothing (other than armor) from? Haven't seen it...do I need to craft clothes if I want them?

2-Same question, but for shields

3-Give me the run-down on enchanting weapons...why should I do it? How do I do it?

4-How do I get a mount? Do I have to buy them? Who do I talk to? Is there a level requirement for using a mount?

5-Once an aggro mob is on my rear, is there any way to get away from them? Is there a "sprint" or "burst run" button that I'm missing? I've noticed if you're near guards, they'll do the job for you, but there aren't always guards around.

6-Should I harvest and craft myself? Is there an easy way to find players who sell goods?

7-What's the easiest way to earn money?

8-I have a bunch of quartered resources in my pack that my "local suppliers" don't want to buy from me...would anyone else want to buy them? Should I just destroy them?

I think that's all my verbal diarhea for now. Please help me out!

This is one of the worse parts of the game right now. We need a burst run BAD! As it stands right now if you get jumped by a bunch of aggros you can try to hightail it back to the guards, (although the mobs will follow you to no end and have a friggin blast tagging you all the way), or accept your fate and go down swinging.

One of the first things I do with a new char is get heal self.

There is run speed as an ability, cant remeber in which skill tree I got it but it was around lvl 20 and lasts for about 10 secs. It's fast enough to get ahead enough of the mob to make it back to the nearest town on the refugee isle but I doubt it will save anyone out in the mainland :(

Some kind of "help-yell" as its in EQ would be nice to be able to aid someone in peril. The messages in EQ goes like: "Ayne yells for help from behind and left of you" as the system tracks the position of the person doing /yell and this command can be linked to a hotbutton.

For me its part of the fun of every online game to blast a mob away from someone running for his life or be snatched myself from deaths grasp - such things often start the best friendships :)

You can buy them from local merchants. Yrkanis is ... Matis? I dunno.. the Matis vendors are around the smaller tree thing. It is better to buy from players tho.

6-Should I harvest and craft myself? Is there an easy way to find players who sell goods?
It's up to you if you want to craft and harvest. If you want to be self-sufficient, go right ahead. Sometimes after hunting for awhile you might want to lay back and do something else... having a craft/harvest to do does help time along and it is rewarding. However, if you intend to focus on doing everything, it will take you longer.

In region chat you should sometimes see people talking about items. If you want you can ask if anyone is selling some armor. It should never be difficult to find someone that will sell you armor on noob island.
7-What's the easiest way to earn money?
On Atys it is called Dapper. To earn it, it depends on what your focus is. As a crafter, you sell your items to players or to the vendors. As a harvester, you could theoretically obtain Dapper by selling high quality materials. Magicians and Fighters are best left to just bring home the loot and sell it to vendors. It's possible that on noobland people will want color specific materials, so you could also sell some loot to crafters.
8-I have a bunch of quartered resources in my pack that my "local suppliers" don't want to buy from me...would anyone else want to buy them? Should I just destroy them?
A good idea each time you come across a new item as loot, is to check it's info. If the info says it is a mission item, then don't pick it up. If the items in your inventory are mission items (Yubo Hairs/Skulls for instance) then destroy them. Unless you have a mission that requires these items, they are useless.

3 - Enchanting/Enchanted weapons are the difference between a good fighter and a VERY good fighter (if they know how to control aggro, a great fighter). To enchant a weapon it must first be a crafted weapon, and you must have a "crystallized spell". After the weapon has been enchanted (place weapon in right hand and right click the crystal, use the option "enchant right hand") you will also need "sap crystals" to load the weapon. Once you have this all done, you will need to click the "use item enchantment" stanza on your hands menu. This will instant cast the spell the weapon is enchanted with, provided you have enough sap avilable to cast it.

4 - Mounts are currently not available, but if you read the threads that are stickied about patches you will see they are around the corner. You can expect to find them at the stables and I believe you more likely to need money, not levels to acquire them.

5 - Aggro can be dealt with several ways depending on your location. There is a "speed-up" skill you can acquire, this used in conjunction with "invulnerability" is a very good combo to get you to the nearest town, portal, tribe camp or friendly group needed to avoid death. Depending on the mob you can also afflict them with a spell, then make a "speed-up" dash to a safe place.

Just to clearify questions 1 & 2 which nobody answered correctly. The poster asked if there was a place to buy clothing not armor. The answer is no, because there is no clothing other than armor in the game. This is not like SWG where you can custom make clothes. Currently the only fashion you can chose is light, med, heavy armor and depending on the material, what color they will be.

One of the first things I do with a new char is get heal self.
I don't think players should be able to outrun monsters. It takes the fear and the excitement of exploration out of the game. Also, it is highly unrealistic that a human in full armor carrying a 10-foot pike will be able to outrun a highly-specialized, canine, killing machine.

A scout-type player should have a skill that allows extended run speed boosts but I think that is about it. No mages, healers, or fighters should be able to outrun most of the aggressive monsters in the game. They should only be able to outrun large, passive creatures that have some other form of defense, such as a turtle pulling its head into the shell.

Personally, I'm tired of games that have no recourse for poor decisions. I remember in DAOC and Ultima Online where I would run through dungeon rooms full of monsters and not even break a sweat. Last night I travelled very far from the mainland town, exploring. I was careful to stay out of range of all of the Ragus that I couldn't kill. I stood in the road while one Ragus looked at me and was then distracted by a running Caprynni. I waited for it to chase the Cap a safe distance and then continued on. Later I found two more Ragus napping by the road after finishing a meal. I was able to successfully sneak by them without getting their attention.

I made it quite a ways and stumbled across a bandit camp. There was a sole bandit patrolling the border and he didn't look too difficult in his minimal clothing and with his unimpressive sword. I decided to take a chance and attack. It turns out that he had a number of friends hiding in the bushes and they made quick work of me, but I was glad it worked out that way. My blood was pumping as the bandits continued to swarm in and turn a hopeful situation increasing less hopeful. If I could have turned my heavily armored body around and run madly away from my near-naked foes I would not have had the rush of battle that I did. Also, I would not have learned the lesson I did; a bandit in camp is worth ten in the bush.

I hope the game developers continue to add realism to massive multiplayer games. I like that our fluffy Yubo do not carry Dapper or daggers.

I gotta say that in general I agree, but there are some problems...mobs don't spawn until they are very close some times, which makes getting aggrod more random, and hard to avoid with good tactics. Also, I've been killed a bunch of times by people who inadvertantly pull mobs on me while running away (or towards guards), which is also quite annoying.

I like the fact that the "con" system is very vague...it adds an element of danger and excitement for sure.

And thanks for the clarification on armor/clothing. So I guess the only way to get armor in a specific color is to craft it myself, or find a player who wants to craft it for me. Being pretty is very important to me, and it's hard to be pretty when you can't figure out what color your armor is gonna be, or what it will look like.

I've also heard of "caster's pants"...where the heck do these come from?
