I am primarily Melee Weapons at level 38.
I also now have Ranged Weapons at level 21, I think.
My question is, should I purchase a Ranged Weapon and bring it up to the level of my Melee Weapon skill, or do I switch to Ranged whenever I feel like it?
My concern is that if I am at level 60 with Melee and switch to Ranged, I would not have the Ranged skill to hit level 60 critters and would get no XP for killing level 21 critters.
Thanks.

You would not neeeeeed to fight the same stuff you were fighting around 21 melee if you pickup range at 60, but the reason for that is because you will have better armor/dodge skills/more hp/higher regen.... and the ability to beat the mob over the head with a big stick when you get tired of shooting it . You would still get exp for using ranged fight to kill level 20something mobs even if you were 250 melee though yes, works the same way with magic when it splits into magic>offensive/defensive
Re: Melee Weapons and Ranged Weapons Skills
As long as you do not hit the critter with a melee attack and only with a ranged attack then the xp you gain is based on the level of your ranged.
Attack only with ranged and you will earn xp as if you were killing the critter with a 21 lvl ranged skill (using your above levels)
If you were to hit a critter even once with your level 60 melee skills then the xp you gain (for both ranged and melee) would be based off the level 60 skill (ie: the highest skill rating that basically affected the critter).
So to sum up. As long as you only use ranged it wont matter what level your melee skill is when you go to train up your ranged.
Hopefully that helps and makes some sense.
