Server Patch/Downtime

We would like to inform you that the next patch will be a long patch.
It will last 8 hours. This is due to the fact that we need to do a linux upgrade on our server.

As a result that patch will happen as follows:
- 5 hours for linux patch
- 3 hours for game patch

We have no date for next patch, but will soon.

Perhaps a little more explanation would be in order here.
A downtime of approx. 8 hours is very long and does not do justice to the paying customer. Certainly when we take in account the earlier down times this week already.
This is a machine patch and a game patch. Why not do it separate?
I don't want to flame here. But you just don't say we are down for a complete 'working day'.

A patch takes as long as it take. Do you rather want them to neglect neccessary patches and risk unplanned downtimes. Or to lie and telling you that it only takes 2-3 hours and let you wait and wait like it seems to be custom in other MMO I know. Or to put the patch on and not test the system afterwards?

The unplanned downtime in this game is very minimal and the planned downtime acceptable. Especially considering how little we pay for the service.

It's all a matter of perspective. You really can't complain when the system is down for a few hours when you think that some games are down for MUCH longer.

Take a look at this post : http://ryzom.com/forum/showthread.php?t=8724

At the time of that post, the game had been down 24 HOURS!

the next patch will take exactly one french work day if everything goes smooth, 08:00 AM - 04:00 PM local time and more hours will be added as necessary, simple as that

Quit your *****ing, seriously, I say take the servers down for a week if it means when you turn them on they are bug free.

Apparently people are unaware that when you do some software patches on Linux, sometimes you have to rebuild the KERNEL, now this is a linux server FARM, so if you touch one kernel, you touch them all, and if they can do that in 4 hours, Lord help them, do NOT EXPECT the servers to be up in the 8 hour estimated timeframe.

Deal with the patch time, let them roll out bug fixes, and look forward to a smoother game, you can go to the mall, watch a movie, use real life time away from the game, you don't have to live in it.

But we like to moan, that what we do best :)

we love to get our expectations up without considering the work involved. Some guys in a dark room with bubbling potions and tesla coils do the work, eternally divising ways of getting rid of bugs while creating others ;P

May be listed as a bug fix patch, but we know by now, theres always mystery things added, then ya read through the patch notes and say either "oh, cool..." or "doh.." :P
