More newbie questions

Hi all :p got some more questions for you. I bought the game on monday and I am still in the newbie area.

- Are ranged weapons any good? What type of character most commonly use them?

- Are the chances of getting a specific mat type from any class of mobs the same, independently of where I find the mobs or what level they are?

- I am trying to get my crafting skill to keep pace with the others but its difficult. My main problem is that I have the wrong mats. For all the item types I can produce, I am short on one mat type. Still my inventory is almost full of mats. Do you have any advice for me?

- When you give items to an NPC vendor to sell - from which vendors can other players buy those items? Is it all vendors of that class in the playzone?

In a word, no. This is actually a great selection of threads on the subject:

Only those of us crazy enough to level a broken tree try it; wouldn't recommend it on your first go around to Ryzom.

I'm answering this two ways since I don't know which question you're asking. Each specific mob drops between 2-5 different items, of the same ql and same quality for that particular mob. Those drops will be identical across Ryzom for that particular mob (e.g. weeny kipee), but different species (kipees vs raguses vs mektoubs) drop very different mats (explosives vs points vs hides). Which and how many of those 2-5 items actually drops depends on which combat skill you use (quick melee kills drop a lot more than magic/ranged) and what particular item you're looking for (eyes drop particularly rarely compared to other mats, for instance.)

Post-patch 1, crafting as a solo skill went the way of the dodo bird. Realistically, harvesting is the only way to go to supply requirements; using mob drops works for the occasional item or two but not for grinding. I'd sell lower quality drop mats and find harvest spots for the ones you're missing and then craft and sell. Or, as much as I hate to say this, there's no real need to be a crafter, at least until much later in the game. Its a frustrating profession and while it can be rewarding it takes a lot less time leveling other skills up at first - and at least below q100 there's not a problem finding good item.

If you're still in newbie island, its all the cities on that island. Once you get to the mainland, its all the cities in that race's land - e.g if you sell in Matis, all Matis cities have your item in stock, but you can't see them or access them in Tryker.

Hope that helps!

I am getting the feeling I am a nutcase.
You see, I like digging, now I can craft my own armors is nice too.
Also, I like ranged fight. But I have to tell you this is easy for me, cause I like digging and crafting and I can provide myself with ammo.

Ranged is nice to get a few extra skillpoints in fight.
Ranged is nice, cause it is cool to carry a gun!
Ranged is nice, it is different from anything else.

Actually, ranged fight is like running Linux. You can do a lot with it, but if you cannot support yourself or have friends that can, it is useless. Still: isnt it cool to say you have Ryzom running on Gentoo? (Drakfot?)

Grtz

I really look forward to the day I see a team of homins roaming the land where the fighters are not all carrying 2 handed weapons but instead using shields. The others in the group are not all healers and nukers but instead some riflemen are mixed in among them.

IMO 5 or 6 riflemen with 1 or two tanks, a healer and a nuker could make a seriously formidable team. If the riflemen are all trained with +hit rate and well equiped.

There is another scenario here - invasions. I see a time when the frontline troops will carry rifles etc and open up at range, then switch to melee as the mobs close the gap.

Imagine 50 or 60 Homins in a skirmish line with autolaunchers blasting Kitins to bits, then drawing their swords to charge the bewildered remnants of the once mighty Kitin army...

Oh man, let's get another invasion going :-)

Yup we do!

2 rifleman, 1 tank and 1 healer...
Lots of dead mobs as result.

Thanks for your replies!

I have been on the newbie island for a long time now, maybe I will slack on crafting and harvesting and try to hit the mainland soon.

Maybe if I give mats to the healer and bring a tool, I wanna try the autolauncher. Craft ammo on the spot, just to see if it works :-)
